Abstract:
The present invention relates a footstool (100) to be used in a sedentary position, comprising a platform (150) pivoted to swing about an axis, a rotating means rotating about an axis, and a connecting rod (180) having one end connected to platform (150) and other end connected eccentrically to the rotating means (174) to transfer reciprocating linear motion to the rotating means for providing rhythmic motion to the platform thereby legs of a user of the said footstool. The rhythmic swinging motion provide by the invented footstool will not disturb the concentration of the user from his work.

Claims:
CLAIMS

1. A footstool for providing exercise in a sedentary position, comprising: a platform pivoted to swing about an axis; a rotating means rotating about an axis; and a connecting rod having one end connected to platform and other end connected eccentrically to the rotating means to transfer reciprocating linear motion to the rotating means for providing rhythmic motion to the platform thereby legs of a user of the said footstool.

2. The footstool as claimed in claim 1 , further comprises a speed controlling means adapted on the rotating means to control speed of the rotation of the rotating means thereby controlling swinging of the platform.

3. The footstool as claimed in claim 2, wherein the speed controlling means can be a break mechanism to add friction or resistance to the rotation of the rotating means.

4. The footstool as claimed in claim 2, wherein the speed controlling means can be a gear mechanism to control the rotating of the rotating means.

5. The footrest as claimed in claim 1 , optionally comprises a motor adapted to rotate the rotating means to swing the platform.

6. The footstool as claimed in claim 1 , 2 or 5, wherein the rotating means is a wheel having a crank pin for connecting the connecting rod eccentrically to an axis of rotation of the wheel.

7. The footstool as claimed in claim 1 , 2 or 5, wherein the rotating means is a shaft having a bend for connecting the connecting rod eccentrically.

8. The footstool as claimed in claim 1 , 2 or 5, wherein the platform can be pivoted off-centrally or centrally.

9. The footstool as claimed in claim 1 , 2 or 5, wherein the platform has any shape and preferably a rectangular shape.

10. The footstool as claimed in claim 1 , 2 or 5, wherein the connecting rod is connected to one of the ends of the platform and preferably one of the backside ends of the platform.

11. The footstool as claimed in one of the claims 1 , 2, 5 or 10, wherein the platform is made of plastic, wooden, metal, or cotton, sponge or jelly with or without support or the like or can be made of bag for filling water or the like.

12. The foot stool as claimed in one of the claims, wherein said footstool can be a portable device, or integral part or removably adapted part of table, chair and the like.

13. A foot stool substantially as herein described with reference to the foregoing description with the accompanying drawings.

Description:

A FOOTSTOOL FOR SEDENTARY POSITION

FIELD OF THE INVENTION:

The present invention relates to an exercise device and particularly to a footstool to be used in a sedentary position.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:

Today's nature of the office work, long hours on computers, traveling in train, buses, and long distance flights on airplanes, and watching movies in theaters, disability or illness etc. make people to seat in a sedentary position for long periods of time. Such sedentary position is not good for health and may cause musculoskeletal problems. Further, according to doctors, prolonged seating in sedentary position may also lead to deep venous thrombosis, which may result to pulmonary embolism and sudden death. Conventional footstools used while seating in sedentary position, are static and are generally part of seating arrangement or the others equipments such as table, chair etc. The conventional footstool comprises a static inclined platform for supporting foots which may be fixed to the table or chair. As these are immovable, they condemn the lower limbs to anti natural immobility. This immobility for short time translates into discomfort of the person. A US patent Application No. 2002/0096930 claiming "a dynamic footrest" overcomes the above said problem of the conventional footrest/footstool of being static. This dynamic footrest comprises a pair of adjacent and independent platforms which are rotationally mounted relative to a common transversal axis, in addition to means for transmitting a rotational movement to one of the platforms and means for transmitting rotational movement from one platform to

the other. However, this dynamic footrest compulsory requires an external meaning such as motor for the movement of the footrest. Further, as the device is operated by an external motor, it may cause disturbance in the work of a user, who is seating in sedentary position while working i.e. the user cannot concentrate on work due to movement of his legs by an external force. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is an object of the present invention to provide a footstool to solve abovementioned and other problems. The present invention provides a footstool for providing exercise in a sedentary position, comprising: a platform pivoted to swing about an axis, a rotating means rotating about an axis; and a connecting rod having one end connected to platform and other end connected eccentrically to the rotating means to transfer reciprocating liner motion to the rotating means for providing rhythmic motion to the platform thereby legs of a user of the said footstool. According to the present invention, the footstool may comprise a speed controlling means adapted on the rotating means to control speed of the rotation of the rotating means thereby controlling swinging motion of the platform. According to the present invention, the footstool may comprise a motor adapted on the rotating means to rotate the rotating means to swing the platform in rhythm.

According to one embodiment of the present invention, the rotating means is a wheel having a crank pin for connecting the connecting rod eccentrically to the wheel.

According to the other embodiment of the present invention, the rotating means is a shaft having a bend for connecting the connecting rod eccentrically.

To complement the description that is being given and in order to promote a better understanding of the characteristics of the invention in accordance with a practical embodiment of the same and as an integral part of the said description a set of drawing accompany it in which, in an illustrative and non restrictive way, the following are represented:

Figure 1 is a front view of the footstool, according to one embodiment of the invention. Figure 2 a front view of the footstool, according to another embodiment of the invention.

Figure 6 is a side view of the trajectory of the centered platform, according to an embodiment of the invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT INVENTION

In general, the present invention provides a footstool comprises a platform pivoted to swivel and a rotating means to which one end of the platform is connected eccentrically. The eccentric connection of the platform provides a rhythmic motion.

Referring now to the figures, wherein like numerals represents like parts. Figure 1 and 2 shows portable footstools (100) for sedentary position according to the present invention.

The footstool as shown in Figure 1 and 2 comprises a base (110), which adapts two sufficiently spaced and vertically extended members (120, 130) having bearings (121, 131) respectively. A platform (150) is pivoted between the vertical members (120, 130) with the help of accommodating the shaft (140) or pivoted pins to swing about a pivoted axis. The ends of the shafts or pivoted pins (142, 144) as shown in Figures 3 and 4 are inserted into bearings(121 , 131) and secured by any know conventional means such as bolt, hexagonal nut assembly etc.

As sown in Fig 1 and 2, a supporting rod (160) extends vertically from the base (110) adjacent to any one of the vertically extended members (120) and (130). According to the one embodiment of the present invention as shown in Figure 1 , a wheel (170) is adapted on the said supporting rod (160). The wheel (170) comprises a crank pin (174) located eccentrically. According to another embodiment of the present invention, as shown in Figure 2, a shaft (510) having a bend (514) is adapted on the said supporting rod as a rotating means. According to the preset invention, as shown in Fig 1, one end of a connecting rod (180) is connected to the crank pin (174) and the other end of the connecting rod (180) is connected to the platform (150). As shown in Fig 2, the one end of the connecting rod (180) is connected to the bend (514) provided on the shaft (510) for providing eccentric connection and other end of the connecting rod (180) is connected to the platform (150). As shown in Fig 3 and 4, the platform (150) comprises a portion (154) extending from one of the corners of the platform (150) to which connecting rod (180) is connected. However, a connecting rod can be

connected to one of the corners of the platform and preferably connected to the backside corners of the platform.

According to the present invention, the platform (150) as shown in Fig 3 is preferably pivoted off-centrally that is pivotal axis (Y-Y) is adjacent and parallel to the longitudinal axis (X-X) of the platform. The off-centrally mounting of platform gives an inclination to the platform towards user helping to user's posture. Alternatively, as shown in Fig 4, the platform (150) can be pivoted centrally that is the longitudinal axis can be the pivotal axis of the platform. Figure 5 and 6 shows swinging motion of the platform pivoted off-centrally and centrally respectively.

According to the present invention, a speed controlling means (not shown) can adapted on the rotating means to control speed of the rotation of the rotating means thereby controlling swinging of the platform. The speed controlling means can be a brake mechanism type or gear type mechanism, which resist the rotation of the rotting means that is wheel or shaft so that user will require to apply force on the platform for swinging.

According to the present invention, the footstool can be motorized by connecting motor (not shown) to the rotating means that is to wheel or shaft to swing the platform for a person, who is not able to rotate the platform due to weakness or any other problem.

According to the present invention, the platform can be made of any shape and can be made from the material like iron, stainless steel, rubber or plastic can also be made-up of plastic-bag having filled with liquid inside or can also be made-up of cotton, sponge, cotton, jelly or the like.

The foot stool shown in Figure 1 and 2 is a portable footstool. However, the footstool of the present invention can be an integral or removable part of the chair, table and the like.

Working of the footstool of the present invention: When a user seating in a sedentary portion, applies pressure on the platform of the footstool of the present invention, it causes swinging of the platform in one direction. The connecting rod transfers this linear motion of the platform to the rotating means which results in rotation of the rotating means in the force applied direction. This rotation of the rotating means results in the reciprocating movement of the platform in a rhythm. This rhythmic motion of the platform provides rhythmic motion to the legs of the user whilst seating in a sedentary position without disturbing his concentration on his work. The smoother swinging motion of the platforms transmits a moderate and imperceptible passive physical exercise to the feet and legs of the user that activates the circulation in the lower limbs, efficiently counteracting the unpleasant consequences that are the result of a sedentary activity.

The footstool described above is compact, which is why can be placed, assembled any where in office, while traveling in airplanes, trains and car etc. In the place like airplane, people find difficult to get-up every hourly and take a walk, as it adds to inconvenience to other passengers. By assembling the footstool below the seat of the front passenger, the person seating back to that seat can easily perform the exercise. Likewise, it can be assembled in the offices, in the theaters and the rhythmic swinging motion will not disturb the concentration of the user from his work. Further, the footstool can be assembled on wheelchairs to transmit a small and imperceptible movement to the user's feet

and legs. It can also be positioned at bedside or bed end so that bedridden person can do exercise periodically.

The footstool described above has great versatility as this allows to be manufactured to adapt to various requirements according to the needs of the collectives that requires using of the footstool. The movement of the platforms for the foot can be fixed at infinity of values but, in practice, the recommended parameters are restricted by ergo-therapists and physiotherapists with the object of achieving optimum results for the user. The present invention provides a footstool to eliminate problems of sedentary origin, which occurred with earlier recognized footrest. The invention provides an advantageous application with regard to reduction in manufacturing and thus overall cost. Further, the device is portable and easy to handle because of its compactness and lightweight. While the invention has been described with reference to an exemplary embodiment, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes may be made and equivalents may be substituted for elements thereof without departing from the scope of the invention. In addition, many modifications may be made to adapt a particular situation or material to the teachings of the invention without departing from the essential scope thereof. Therefore, it is intended that the invention not be limited to the particular embodiment disclosed as the best mode contemplated for carrying out this invention, but that the invention will include all embodiments falling within the scope of the appended claims.
