Abstract:
Provided are a friction material and friction member which do not contain environmentally-unfriendly copper or have a copper content of 0.5 mass% or below, and with which there is little rust-caused adhesion and little rust-caused peeling. The friction material comprises a bonding material, an organic filler, an inorganic filler, and a fibrous base material, wherein: the friction material does not contain copper as an element or has a copper content of 0.5 mass% or below, and contains fibrillated aramid fibers as the fibrous base material; the porosity, as measured by an oil impregnation method, is 15% or below; and the sulfate ion concentration, as measured by ion chromatography is 500 ppm or below.
