A friction stir joining method comprising arranging, in superposed fashion, a first member (1) to be joined comprising a metal or resin and a second member (2) to be joined comprising a metal or resin and having a first level-difference part (10) and performing friction stir joining through use of a joining tool (5), the friction stir joining method being provided with: a step for arranging the first member (1) to be joined on a level-difference support surface (12) of the first level-difference part (10) so that a gap (4) is formed between the first member (1) to be joined and a side surface (11) of the first level-difference part (10); a joining tool insertion step for pushing the joining tool (5) into the first member (1) to be joined from a front surface on the reverse side of the first member (1) to be joined from a back surface thereof in contact with the level-difference support surface (12) while rotating the joining tool (5), and inserting the joining tool (5) until the joining tool (5) reaches the level-difference support surface (12) of the second member (2) to be joined; and a stirring step for rotating the joining tool (5) and thereby stirring the first member (1) to be joined and the second member (2) to be joined and forming a joint (3).
