A frictional engagement device (1) is provided with an elastic member (20) between a piston (10) and a friction plate (51) in an axial direction (L). The elastic member (20) is provided with: a second to-be-engaged part that moves freely in the axial direction (L) and engages an engaging part of a cylindrical member (30); and an annular plate-shaped part that is sandwiched from both sides in the axial direction (L) by a pressing surface (14) of the piston (10) and the friction plate (51). Projections and recesses are alternately formed in a circumferential direction in a surface, of the annular plate-shaped part, facing an axial-direction first side (L1). A phase at which a radial groove (14b), formed in the pressing surface (14), and a projection, formed in the annular plate-shaped part, become the same position in the circumferential direction is used as a specific phase, and the engaging part of the cylindrical member (30), a first to-be-engaged part of the piston (10), and the second to-be-engaged part of the elastic member (20) are formed such that the piston (10) and the elastic member (20) cannot engage the cylindrical member (30) at the specific phase.
