Description:
Frog with Trimmed Casting of a Mono-Block

Technical Field

The technical solution relates to construction of a frog with trimmed casting of a mono- block used with railway switches.

Contemporary State of the Art

The hitherto known and used as one of the most important and most stressed parts of railway switches in all and any branching angles are all-cast frogs, frogs with trimmed mono- block. Insert frogs, frogs with cast vee-piece, with forged hardened tip and with surface-hardened wing rails and assembled frogs of rails with various function and utility characteristics.

An example of all-cast frogs are the frogs according to the CZ patent file No. 282131, the disadvantages of which include their demanding manufacture, demanding forming and complicated cleaning after casting, large consumption of steel for manufacture, heavy weight, increased costs on significant range of their machining so as to reach required geometric shape, increased possibility of faults occurrence during machining. That is also connected with large power demands regarding their manufacture, which is set by dimensions of the frog cast, significant extent of machining and increased demands towards faults repairs.

The disadvantage of frogs with trimmed mono-block according to CZ utility model No. 5698 is the construction organization of the terminal part, which does not correspond with requirements towards arrangement of necessary rigidity as needed for transfer of dynamic powers developed during ride of wheel vehicles, which would prevent excessive loads in shaped spots of the cross-section.

The sample type of Insert frogs are the frogs according to CN patent file No. 102021867. the disadvantages of which include their complex design, unfavourable transfer of wheel from the railway steel to cast part of the frog in the are of the frog neck.

The disadvantages of the frog with forged hardened tip and wing rails include lower rigidity and shorter service life. The construction solution does not offer necessary compactness of connection by and between the tip and wing rails, which may manifest by release of joints.

Assembled frogs from rails according to CZ utility model No. 6952 show lower rigidity and they are subject to fast wear and tear. The construction solution of this type of frog does not offer necessary compactness of connection of individual parts assembled one to each other, which manifests by release of construction joints, loss of rigidity and shorter service life.

Technical Solution Base

The construction setup of the trimmed mono-block brings advantages of complete mono- block frogs in the meaning of monolith setting and mechanic static and dynamic definiteness of construction, the load-bearing part of is secured in the place of railway wheels passage via the groove by a monolithic cast, while there is preserved the advantage of trimmed mono-block, i.e. savings of expensive cast material and simplification of manufacture, i.e. reducing the length of the cast and related elimination of foundry faults and costs on levelling and other related production costs.

The advantages are to a large extent obtained by the frog with trimmed cast of the mono- block non-detachably connected on one side of the frog in front of the cast beginning with two pieces of connection rails and - on the other side - with non-detachably connected tip rails, while the trimmed cast of the mono-block is non-detachably connected in the place of the widest part of the mono-block cast with tip rails, while the double-sided wing rails making the groove run-outs from the mono-block cast are detachably connected with the part of the mono-block cast by high-strength screws and with the part of rails by high-strength screws via inserts according to this invention; the invention is based mainly on the fact that in the area of wing rails connection the footings of the mono-block cast are extended by inner smooth transitions with the length„c= mmimally 100 mm" from the inner side wall of the mono-block cast with the dimension of „a= minimally 35 mm" and outer smooth transitions with the length„c= minimally 100 mm" from the outer side wall of the mono-block cast with the dimension„b= minimally 70 mm" while preserving the footing thickness of "d= minimally 14mm" in the place of connection.

From the point of view of the design it seems advantageous for the heads of wing rails with side walls of the cast to be machined in vertical direction in plane without securing the wing rails against movement in vertical direction and the footings of rail wings are processed in such a way so as there is clearance above the cast footing.

The cast of the trimmed mono-block non-detachably connected with connection and tip rails makes by its static and dynamic characteristics - by its placement in one plane - a compact structure comparable with all-cast mono-block structure. The non-detachable joints are performed by welding while meeting the concurrence of geometric shapes of connection and tip rails and the mono-block cast with allowed variation of flatness in the area of welds.

Drawings Explanation

The technical solution will be explained in detail using drawings, where Fig. 1 shows the structural design of the frog with trimmed mono-block with optimized shape of the cast; Fig. 2 shows the mono-block cast in detail of the connection area; Fig. 3 shows cross-section A-A of the mono-block cast in front of the outer transition and inner transition; Fig. 45 shows the cross- section B-B of the mono-block cast in the place of extension of the cast footing from the inner side wall; Fig. 5 shows the cross-section C-C of the mono-block cast in the place of extension of the cast footing from the outer side wall and Fig. 6 shows the cross-section D-D of the mono- block cast in connection of tip and wing rails using high-strength screws via inserts.

Examples of Technical Solution Performance

The technical solution according to Fig. 1 consists of a trimmed cast of the mono-block 1 non-detachably connected on one side of the frog in front of the beginning 2 of the cast with two pieces of connection rails 3 and on the other side with non-detachably connected tip rails 4, while the trimmed cast of the mono-block I is non-detachably connected in the place of the widest part of the tip 5 of the cast of the mono-block i with tip rails 4. The double-sided wing rails 7 making the grooves 6 run-outs from the cast of the mono-block \ are detachably connected with the part of the cast of the mono-block I by high-strength screws 8 and with the part of tip rails 4 by high-strength screws 8J via the inserts 9. As it can be seen in Fig. 3 up to 6, so as to increase the rigidity of the cast of the mono-block i , there are - according to Fig. 2, - in the area of connection 10 of the wing rails 7 extended the footings ]_1 of the mono-block 1 cast with inner smooth transitions 17 in the length of„c= minimally 100 mm" from the inner side wall 15 of the mono-block 1 cast in dimension„a= minimally 35 mm" and with outer smooth transitions 16 in the length of„c= minimally 100 mm" from the outer side wall 12 of the mono- block 1 cast in dimension ,,b= minimally 70 mm while preserving the thickness of the footing d= minimally 14mm in the area of connection 10. The heads 13 of the wing rails 7 are mated from the side with outer side walls 12 of the mono-block 1 cast by machining in vertical direction into a plane without securing the wing rails 7 against movement in vertical direction. The footings 14 of the wing rails 7 are machined in such a way so as there is clearance above the footing Π. of the mono-block L The non-detachably connected cast of the mono-block 1 with connection rails 3 and tip rails 4 with its placement in one plane will make a compact structure by its static and dynamic characteristics.

Industrial Applicability

The technical solution can be used for all the types of switches, mainly the switches designed for modernization of railways with high demands towards rigidity and resistance against dynamic wear and tear. The technical solution can be favourable used even for switches in public tram transport.
