Abstract:
Disclosed is a retardation film having excellent optical properties, including a large refractive index in the direction of thickness of the film, a large out-of-plane retardation, a low wavelength dependence, and a high out-of-plane retardation even in a thin film. Further disclosed is a fumarate diester resin that is for a retardation film and by which said retardation film is obtained. The fumarate diester resin for a retardation film contains a diisopropyl fumarate moiety unit and a fumarate diester moiety unit that has an alkyl group with one or two carbon atoms. The fumarate diester resin that is for a retardation film and the retardation film comprising same are characterized by the relationship between refractive indices when the refractive index in the direction of the axis of phase advancement within the film plane of the retardation film comprising the fumarate diester resin that is for a retardation film is nx, the refractive index in the in-plane direction of the film that is perpendicular to nx is ny, and the refractive index in the direction of film thickness is nz being nx ≤ ny < nz, and is further characterized by the relationship between film thickness and the out-of-plane retardation (Rth) measured at a wavelength of 550 nm indicated in the belowmentioned formula (a) being at least an absolute value of 4.5 nm/film thickness (µm). Rth = ((nx + ny)/2 - nz)xd (formula a), where d indicates the film thickness.
