The purpose of the present invention is to provide a functional water generator that can use functional water generated within an electrolysis vessel to the maximum extent possible. In this functional water generator, an electrolysis unit (4) formed from a positive electrode and a negative electrode is provided within an electrolysis vessel (1). After functional water is generated by electrolysis in the electrolysis unit (4) using water (W) supplied within the electrolysis vessel (1), the functional water is retained within the electrolysis vessel (1) such that at least one part of both the positive electrode and negative electrode are immersed when the functional water is discharged from a discharge unit (3) of the electrolysis vessel (1). By applying a current that flows in the opposite direction of that during functional water generation with respect to the electrodes of the electrolysis unit (4), electrode cleaning in which hardness components adhering to the electrodes during functional water generation are eluted in the water is carried out. The constitution is such that the positive electrode and negative electrode are arranged facing each other in parallel in the vertical direction.
