Abstract:
This invention relates to furnace electrode clamping device comprising: an array of opposed clamping-elements, which abut each other to form a collar, the clamping-elements being movable selectively between a clamped position, in which an electrode is held captive, and an open condition, in which the electrode is free to slip through the clamping-elements, the outer wall of the electrode and the inner wall of the collar abutting each other along an abutment zone; a series of clamps – each clamp being associated uniquely with a clamping-element – for clamping the clamping-elements selectively in the clamped condition; an actuator, for moving the clamps selectively between the clamped condition and the open position, characterised in that the clamping force of the clamps, when in the clamped position, are distributed substantially evenly throughout the abutment zone. The invention also extends to a furnace comprising a series of electrodes and a series of such clamping devices.
