Abstract:
Provided is a furnace for a glass base material in which arc discharge occurring inside the furnace is prevented. The furnace for a glass base material comprises: a furnace core tube (3) into which the glass base material is supplied; a cylindrical slit heater (4) having slits (7) alternately formed from the upper and lower ends thereof and surrounding the furnace core tube; a heat insulator surrounding the outside of the slit heater; and a furnace housing surrounding the whole. If the gap between the slit heater (4) and the furnace core tube (3) or between the slit heater (4) and a conductive member closest to the slit heater is denoted by D, the maximum value of the electric field in the gap by E1, the number of slits of the slit heater by N, the slit width of the slit heater by S, and the maximum value of the electric field between the slits by E2, the values of D, N, and S are set so as to satisfy the relationship as follows: E1 ≥ E2.
