The invention broadly relates to the field of games involving the use of darts and in particular to a dart game that allows players to simulate a ball sport. The dart game requires darts and a dart board. The darts may be of any suitable kind of projectile that allows a person to throw and target an area of a dart board, wherein, subsequent to the dart striking the dart board, the dart board retains the dart or at least provides an indication of the position of incidence. Preferably when the dart board retains a dart it is in a manner that allows the dart to be easily removed.

The dart board could be any board suitable for receiving or retaining the darts. The dart board could be a standalone apparatus for mounting on a wall surface, or it could be a surface adapted to attach to an existing conventional dartboard. The dart board could be a soft material so that a dart having a forward protruding spike can penetrate and be retained by the board. Alternatively, the dart may include an, a magnetic interaction, adhesive, suction cup or material such as Velcro on the forward most portion of the dart and the dart board made of a material such that the dart will be retained on the surface once struck. An example of a dart is shown in Figure 11.

A further variation of the dart board is where the board is implemented electronically. For example, an electronic dart may be thrown and the electronic board registers the position at which the dart struck. The electronic variation may also include an electronic scoring system. A graphical display may be appended to the electronic scoring system to graphically signify aspects of a game in progress. The particular position of the dart may be associated with a player status and/or accreditation of points. The electronic scoring system may be updated according to a change in status or points by changing the appearance of a graphical display. The game using an electronic implementation may be played over a network such as local area networks, wider area networks and the internet. Players in different locations may play the same game with the network providing a communications link to track the progress of each player. Further, a two-way video and/or audio system may be implemented such that each player, in a different location, may communicate with another player.

In another variation of the dart board the board surface may be electronic and simulated on a computer system having a graphical interface and a user interface such as a mouse or keyboard or other form or user input device. The user interface could be used to aim a virtual dart at a virtual dart board image as displayed by the graphical interface. A game may be played over a network such as local area networks, wider area networks and the internet. The dart board has a surface that is visually representative of a ball game. Preferably, the surface is visually representative of a game of soccer, alternately referred to as football herein and elsewhere. However, it is envisaged that the form the dart board described herein could equally be representative of a game of hockey or other similar ball based field sport that utilises a goal box at each end of a playing field. The board used for the game is preferably similar in proportion to an actual game field.

The preferred form of the dart board is representative of a field to which it is to simulate. For example, a dart board representing a soccer field will be rectangular in form.

However, the dart board could equally be square or circular in form as desired or constrained by other limitations such as aesthetic, packaging or manufacturing

considerations. Optionally, the use of field markings on the game board may be used to further authenticate the appearance of the game board. For example, for a soccer field, a centre line, a centre circle and goal box lines may be included. To represent a game of soccer, the invention advantageously reflects the positional nature of the players on a soccer field, the nature of players marking other players on the field, and the dynamic nature of passing of the ball between players on the soccer field.

The dart board includes a plurality of target zones that reflect the general positional aspects of a game of soccer. For example, longitudinal aspects such as goal, defensive, midfield and offensive or attacking field positions and lateral aspects such as central and wing field positions.

Preferably the dart board has a target zone for each, or a selection of each of the general field positions. The dart board may have additional target zones representative of other aspects of the game, such as offside positions, penalty positions, throw in positions and corner positions.

Preferably the target zones are distinguishable by colour, by use of a logo or other visual aspect, by mechanical means such as a wire barrier that outlines a perimeter such as used by conventional dart boards, or by a geometrical indication such as the shape of a target zone.

In the preferred embodiments of the invention the dartboard has a plurality of target zones. The target zones are preferably identifiable as target regions for one or both players. Preferably each player has a target zone associated with attacking positions, midfield positions, defensive positions and goal positions. Accordingly, the dart board allows two players to simulate a game of soccer by aiming darts at particular target zones to simulate movement of the ball about a soccer field and ultimately a goal. The object of a game is to score more goals than the opposition. In preferred embodiments of the invention a selection of target zones will be located within the perimeter of other target zones. Further, target zones preferably decrease in size across the board from a defensive region to an offensive region. The reducing target zone size provides that the more a player advances across the board, the smaller their target becomes and therefore the harder to hit the target becomes. This aspect advantageously reflects an actual game of soccer in that offensive manoeuvres are increasingly difficult for an attacking team as the defending team will usually have more players defending the goal than those players attacking the goal or other scoring region.

Preferably the dart board has an equal number of target zones for each player or at least a substantially similar geometrical area for corresponding target zones. Preferably the target zones are substantially symmetrical about a centreline or halfway line of the board and preferably also symmetrical about the longitudinal centre of the dart board.

In preferred embodiments at least some of the target zones are circular and aligned concentrically. That is, one target zone is located within another target zone. Preferably the outer target zone has a larger surface area than the inner target zone. Preferably the inner target zone, being the smaller of the two surface areas, is associated with a player's offensive or attacking side of the board.

Preferably, at least some of the target zones decrease in relative surface area in the direction from the defensive goal toward the attacking goal box. Simultaneously, at least some the target zones increase in relative surface area in the direction from the attacking goal toward the defensive goal box. This creates an element of complexity for a player advancing across the field by reducing the surface of the target zones as they travel toward the opposition goal.

Optionally, for each of the herein described preferred embodiments of the dart board the board is to be used in conjunction with a set of rules. One rule is that two people or two teams of people are able to play a game by using the dart board and a set of rules.

Another rule is that the game comprises a plurality of turns.

Before starting the game, the players or teams of players must decide who is to throw first and/or which end they will defend. This may be decided, for example, by a coin toss. The first player is given three darts. Play commences when the first dart contacts the dart board. A player or teams turn is over when three (or other specified number) darts have contacted the dart board. If a goal or other scoring event is not scored during a player's turn, the opponent will take over at, or near to, the last position held. Where concentric target zones are used, the opponent will take over by aiming for the target zone concentric with the last target zone held. Preferably the game is over when a predetermined time has elapsed or after a predetermined top score is achieved. A penalty shoot out is optionally performed if the score is tied then. The penalty shoot out begins with the player who started the game first. Preferably the penalty shoot out consists of each player taking turns to throw five darts at the opposition goal. The winner is the player who scores the most goals.

Preferably a sudden death shootout begins if the score remains tied after five darts are thrown by each player.

Figure 1 shows a dart board layout according to an embodiment of the invention indicative of a soccer field or other ball sport. The dartboard has a plurality of target zones denoted with either A or B. The target zones denoted A represent zones to be targeted by a first player while target zones denoted B represent zones to be targeted by a second player. As mentioned, the target zones may alternatively be distinguished by other visual, mechanical or geometrical means.

The dart board includes target zones including :

• goal zones (or scoring region) 4, 13, · defensive zones 3, 12,

• defensive midfield zones 1, 2, 8,11,

• attacking midfield zones 6, 7, 9, 10 and

• attacking zones 22, 23.

A first player has a defensive half of the dart board 5, or the portion of the dart board between their goal and the halfway line 14. The defensive half of the board 5 of the first player includes regions representing a goal zone 4, defensive target zones 3 and defensive midfield target zones 1, 2. Preferably there are at least two defensive target zones and at least three defensive midfield target zones.

The first player has an attacking region of the dart board 25, or the portion of the dart board between the halfway line 14 and the opposition goal. The attacking region of the board 25 includes attacking midfield target zones 9, 10 and attacking wing target zones 23. Preferably there are at least three attacking midfield target zones and at least two attacking target zones.

A second player has a defensive half of the dart board 25, or the portion of the dart board between their goal and the halfway line 14. The defensive half of the board 25 of the second player includes regions representing a goal zone 13, defensive target zones 12 and defensive midfield target zones 8, 11. Preferably there are at least two defensive target zones and at least three defensive midfield target zones.

The second player has an attacking region of the dart board 5, or the portion of the dart board the between the halfway line 14 and the opposition goal. The attacking region of the board 25 includes attacking midfield target zones 6, 7 and attacking wing target zones 22. Preferably there are at least three attacking midfield target zones and at least two attacking target zones.

Preferably the attacking midfield target zones 6, 7, 9, 10 are located within the defensive midfield target zones 1, 2, 8, 11. Similarly, the attacking zones 22, 23 are located within the defensive zones 12.

Preferably the dart board of Figure 1 is used in conjunction with some or all of the following rules:

A first player associated with a first set of target zones, such as denoted A in Figure 1, begins to play the game by throwing one of three (or other specified number) darts at the defensive midfield target zone 1. That player's turn is over when three darts make contact with the dart board. If target zone 1 is successfully targeted, the first player can use the second dart to target a target zone located in a more attacking field position, such as target zones 8 or 11. When the first player successfully targets the defensive midfield target zone 1, their next dart can be used to target one of the attacking midfield target zones 9, 10. When the first player successfully targets the attacking midfield target zones 9, 10, their next dart can be used to target the attacking target zones 23.

According to the rule set, the objective of each player is to move from their current position, toward the opposition goal, by successfully targeting zones at the next level of board advancement. For example, if the player has a dart in a defensive zone, their next target is a defensive midfield zone, then an attacking midfield zone, and so on. If a player fails to hit their intended target zone, and has at least one of the three darts remaining in their turn, they may try again to hit their intended target zone until their turn ends.

When a player's turn has ended by throwing all of their three darts, the opponents turn can commence. Preferably the next player commences their turn by first targeting the target zone concentric with the target zone occupied by their opponent on the previous turn. For example, if a first player has their third dart in target zone 23, the second player begins their turn by targeting zone 12. This aspect advantageously reflects an actual game of soccer where the ball may be stolen in a tackle or otherwise turned over. To shoot for a goal, a player must have successfully targeted their zones closest to the opposition goal 4, 13, and have at least one of their three darts remaining. For example, if a first player has their second dart in target zone 23, their third dart can be used to target the goal zone 13. Successful targeting of the opposition goal zone scores a point for that player. It should be noted that when a player fails to target an intended zone, they may resume their attempt. However, in a variation of the rules, when a first player inadvertently targets an opposition target zone, their turn has ended and the second player can begin their turn by targeting the same zone. Optionally, if a player intends to hit their target zone and inadvertently targets their opponent's target zone, their turn has ended. When a player fails to target an intended zone and instead strikes free area located around the target zones, their turn may resume if they have at least one of their three darts remaining.

Figure 2 shows another embodiment of the invention which is a variation providing extra complexity to the first embodiment shown in Figure 1. The dart board provides inner target zones 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 that can be targeted by either of the two players. The inner target zones are distinguishable by cross hatching in Figure 2, but may

alternatively be a unique colour, a logo, or some another visual, mechanical or geometrical aspect as previously discussed. In addition, a goal keeper target zone 15, 24 is provided in or about the goal target zones 4, 13 on each half of the board. Preferably the board of Figure 2 is used in conjunction with some or all of the following rules in addition to or instead of the rules applicable to the embodiment of Figure 1 : A player is then allowed to target a zone ahead by two steps when one of the inner target zones 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 is successfully targeted by a player in their defensive half of the board. For example, the first player who successfully targets inner target zone 16 may target an offensive midfield target zone 9, 10 or the midfield inner target zones 20, 21 with a subsequent throw of the dart.

A player is allowed to target the goal zone 4, 13 when one of the inner target zones 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 is successfully targeted in their attacking half of the board. For example, the first player who successfully targets inner target zone 20 may target goal zone 13 with a subsequent throw of the dart. A goal is scored if a player successfully targets the goal zone 4, 13. However, in a further rule, the second player may optionally target the goal keeper zone 24, 15 in their defensive goal box with one throw attempt. If the second player successfully targets the goal keeper, the goal is saved. Play may optionally resume by a player aiming for the defensive midfield target zone 1, 11. Figure 3 shows another embodiment of the invention which is a variation providing extra or differing complexity to previously described embodiments.

The dart board includes concession target zones 40 located within the defensive target zones 3, 12. Further the dart board includes corner target zones 26 located at or proximate the corners of the dart board. The concession target zones 40 are used to simulate an offside event or the concession of a corner kick.

Preferably the board of Figure 3 is used in conjunction with some or all of the following rules, in addition to or instead of the rules applicable to previous embodiments:

A player who lands a dart in concession zone 40 in their defensive half of the board concedes a corner kick. When a corner kick is conceded, the players turn ends and the opponents turn begins. The opponent must then target a corner kick zone 26 with one of their three darts. With a remaining dart, the opponent may then target the opposition goal zone in an attempt to score a goal and gain a point. Optionally, in a further rule, subsequent to the goal zone being successfully targeted the defensive player may attempt to target the goal keeper zone 15, 24, with a single dart, to save the goal. A player who lands a dart in concession zone 40 in their offensive half of the board concedes an offside. When an offside is conceded, the players turn ends and the opponents turn begins. For example, player A having a dart located in offensive midfield target zone 9 may attempt to target offensive wing target zone 17 to allow their next turn to shoot at goal zone 13. However, should player A land a dart in concession zone 40, their turn will end and player B will resume play from target zone 12.

Figure 4 shows another embodiment of the invention providing all features of previously discussed embodiments to vary or provide extra complexity to the game.

Preferably the embodiment shown in Figure 4 utilises a combination of some or all of the set of rules applicable to and as shown in previously discussed in relation to the embodiments of Figures 1 to 3.

Figure 5 shows another embodiment of the invention providing optional extra features in addition to those shown in previously discussed embodiments. The dart board features 'yellow card' target zones 30 located near the goal target zones 4, 13 at each end of the board. An additional yellow card target zone 31 is located near or at the centre of the board. A Yed card' target zone 32, 34 is located within the yellow card target zones. The yellow card and red card target zones provide added complexity to the rule set, for example, by ending a player's turn or reducing the number of darts available to throw. The yellow card and red card target zones are preferably interspersed between the positional target zones on the board. Preferably the yellow and red card target zones 30, 32 are located in or near the 'goal box' region of the soccer field which may optionally be visually defined on the surface of the dart board. Interspersion of yellow and red card target zones provides that stray dart throws can be captured and alter the dynamic of the game being played.

Preferably the yellow card and red card target zones are used in conjunction with some or all of aspects of the following rule set:

A player that lands a dart on a yellow or red card zone in their defensive half of the dart board concedes a free kick. When a free kick is conceded, the opponent is allowed a single dart to shoot for a goal by successfully targeting the goal zone 4, 13. If the goal zone is successfully targeted a point is awarded. No opportunity to save the goal is given to the player who conceded the free kick.

A player that lands a dart on a yellow or red card zone in their offensive half of the dart board concedes a yellow card or a red card respectively.

If a yellow card is conceded, that players turn is over. The opponent will resume play at the target zone which was being aimed for when the yellow card was conceded. If a red card was conceded, that players turn is over. The opponent will resume play at the target zone which was being aimed for when the yellow card was conceded.

Optionally, the target zone being aimed for by the offending player is disallowed from further play. For example, if a player is aiming for target zone 1 and the dart lands on the defensive red card zone 32, target zone 1 is no longer available to the offending player for the remainder of the game. It should be noted that target zone 1 is the first target zone used to begin play. If target zone becomes unavailable for use due to a red card incident, the player must instead select a target zone in a more defensive position to begin play from, such as the defensive target zones 3. The dart board also features a 'free kick' target zone 33. Similar to the yellow and red card target zones, the free kick target zones 33 are interspersed positional target zones on the board such that throws of the dart that stray from their intended target can be captured and alter the dynamic of the game being played.

Preferably the free kick target zones are used in conjunction with some or all of aspects of the following rule set:

A player that lands a dart on a free kick zone 33 in their defensive half of the dart board concedes a free kick. When a free kick is conceded, the opponent is allowed a single dart to shot for a goal by successfully targeting the goal zone. If the goal zone is successfully targeted a point is awarded. No opportunity to save the goal is given to the player who conceded the free kick.

A player that lands a dart on a free kick zone 33 in their offensive half of the dart board concedes a free kick. The players turn is over and the opponent resumes play at the target zone being aimed for.

The dart board also features an 'injury' target zone 35. Similar to the yellow card, red card and free kick target zones, the injury' target zones 35 are interspersed positional target zones on the board such that throws of the dart that stray from their intended target can be captured and alter the dynamic of the game being played. The dart board also features a 'substitution' target zone 36.

Preferably the injury target zones are used in conjunction with some or all of aspects of the following rule set:

A player that lands a dart on an injury target zone 35 ends their turn and has their total of darts to be used reduced from three to two. The player must play only with two darts from this point onwards. The player is able to regain the third dart by successfully targeting the substitution target zone 36.

Figure 6 shows another embodiment of the invention which is a variation on previously discussed embodiments. The dart board has positional target zones for each of the two players divided into a plurality of segments. Each of the segments has an indication of the direction a player must throw their next dart. Preferably each of the segments of the target zones has an arrow indicating the direction of the next target zone to be hit by a player during their turn. It should be noted that further variations of the previously described embodiments may further include either all or a selection of positional target zones that comprise a plurality of segments with directional indications.

Preferably each of the positional target zones is divided into a plurality of segments. Alternatively, only a selection of the positional target zones may be divided into segments. Preferably the arrow in each target zone is pointed toward the closet positional target zone in the direction of advancement across the board. Dividing the target areas into segments advantageously reflects the positional nature of an actual game of soccer and the nature of a player being marked and therefore their passing options limited.

As an example, target zone 1 is divided into three segments la, lb and lc. If a first player, having target zones denoted A in the drawings, successfully targeted segment la, then that player will next aim for the aggressive central midfield target zone 10, which is segmented into target zones 10a and 10b. Similarly, if the first player successfully targets segment lb, then that player will next aim for target zones 2a or 2b.

Note that where inner target zones 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 may offer an alternative target zone in such instances where they are included in a particular target zone. However, it is preferable that only a particular inner target zone is an optional target when associated with a segment or segments to be targeted. For example, where a player has

successfully targeted segment la, then that player will next aim for the aggressive central midfield target zone 10, or the associated inner target zone 20.

Figure 7a illustrates a dice apparatus 37, in disassembled form, that can be used in conjunction with the dart boards according to any of the described embodiments. Figure 7b shows the dice apparatus 37 in assembled form. The dice apparatus is to be used to add extra complexity to the game by adding elements of pseudo random nature. The dice apparatus 37 provides the advantage of closely reflecting the sometimes unpredictable outcome of events that occur during an actual game of soccer. Preferably the dice apparatus has at least six sides that are associated with the following events and subsequent ramifications:

1. a foul - a free kick is awarded

2. a "Hollywood" (i.e. simulation of a faked injury or foul)- a free kick is conceded

3. referee abuse - a yellow card is conceded

4. head butt - a free kick is awarded, a red card is issued

5. a dive - a free kick is conceded

6. a hack - a player is injured.

Preferably the dice apparatus is used as an alternate to playing the previously discussed rules associated with the injury 35 and free kick 33 target zones.

Figure 8 illustrates the most preferred embodiment of the invention having a

combination of features of each the previously described embodiments. Figure 9

illustrates a line drawing of the board of Figure 8 with additional markings that reflect the markings on a soccer field. Ideally, the board has vibrant colours and may further employ a colour scheme of a local football club, club logos, sponsor logos and the like. It should be noted that further logo placement or advertisement may instead surround the game board outline, or be located within and outside the game board.

Figure 10 shows a schematic view of an electronic implementation of the game. A game board 50 is linked to a control system 51. The game board has a surface with a sensor or plurality of sensors that generate a signal indicative of the location at which a dart has struck the game board surface. The location information is received by the control system and compared to stored information of the target areas on the surface. The control system generates a signal indicative of the target area struck by a dart and preferably transmits that signal to one or more of a display or other output device (e.g. audio) 52 which may be a score board, position indication light, audio output and/or graphical representation of the game surface.

The control system may also send information to the display 52 such as a player's name, an indication of turn, the darts thrown, the current score, one or more rules, or other features that may be represented visually as described elsewhere in this specification. The control system is further configured to receive and transmit position information, via a network 70, to one or more other control systems 61 that are, in turn, also connected to a game board 60 and display 62. The control system and network may then facilitate a game being played in different locations. The network may be a local network such as a games parlour, a wider network that may interconnect two buildings or even include the internet. When the internet is utilised as the network, a game may potentially be played between players or teams of players located anywhere in the world.

A server 80 may be connected to the network 70 and maintain a record of games being played. The server may be configured to track individual players or teams of players or even facilitate a tournament where many game boards are interconnected by the network.

Figure 11 shows a perspective view of a preferred layout of the game board 50 with flanking display boards 53. The flanking display boards may be used for holding signage such as sponsor logos, for scoring, for indicating any one or more of the rules to be used with the playing surface.

Preferably the embodiment of at least Figure 8 is used in conjunction with the following rule set:

The object of the game is to score more goals or other scoring event than the opposition. Goals are scored by moving across the board to a point where you can throw a dart into the opposition's goal and they are not able to save the goal by successfully hitting their goal keeper target zone.

1. STARTING a) A coin is tossed. The winner of the toss goes first and gets to choose what colour they want to play as and/or what direction they want to go (left or right) and/or who is to start first. The board is orientated if necessary.

2. GENERAL MOVEMENT a) A player has three darts to move across the board towards the opposition goal starting with the centre circle on their defensive side of half-way, i.e. 1 or 11. b) Hitting the targeted area advances the player across the field one circle in the direction indicated by the arrow in the area that was hit. c) Hitting an inner target area advances the player two circles across the field in any direction they choose. If the player is in the attacking half and hits inner target area then a shot is allowed (see 5.). d) Should the red player hit an opposition target area no action is taken unless the game is using the HARD RULES or the player is playing with a handicap (see rule 15.) in which case they go back a circle. e) If the player in possession hits outside of a target zone, but within the field of play, no action is taken. f ) A player's turn is over if: i) . a player has used their 3 darts and a goal or goal shot has not been achieved, or ii) . less than three of their darts hit their targets, or iii) . a player hits a free kick (FK) or an injury (INJ) circle or (unless playing Dice Rules 14.), or iv). a player hits a red or yellow card (rule 10. or rule 11.), or v). a player throws a dart outside of the field of play (rule 3. HARD RULES ONLY). g) If a player hits all three intended targets with their three darts then the player's turn continues with three darts or until 2f. h) If a player hits the concession target zones while defending then a corner is conceded. 3. OUT OF PLAY (HARD RULES) a) If a player throws a dart outside of the field of play OVER THE SIDELINE their turn is over and possession is turned over at the circle that was being targeted. b) If a player throws a dart out of play BEHIND THEIR GOAL their turn is over and possession is turned over and a corner is taken (rule 9.). c) If a player throws a dart out of play BEHIND THE OPPOSITION GOAL their turn is over and possession is turned over to the defensive player, who starts again from the centre circle on their side of half-way (Goal Kick). 4. OFFSIDE a) If a dart is thrown into a concession zone in the offensive half then it is deemed that the player is offside and possession is turned over.

5. SHOOTING a) Shooting is possible when a player hits an inner target zone in their offensive half. The player may still shoot at goal even if the third dart hits the inner target zone. b) If the player's shot misses the goal or hits the keeper circle, the defensive player starts again from the centre circle on their side of half-way (Goal Kick). c) If the attacking player hits the goal a shot on target has been recorded. The defensive player then has a chance to save it with 1 dart by trying to hit their goal keeper target zone. d) If the defensive player hits the keeper the shot is saved and a corner is conceded (9.). e) If the defensive player misses the keeper A GOAL IS SCORED and the defensive player starts again from the centre circle on their side of half-way. 6. OWN GOALS a) An own goal is scored when a player throws a dart into his own goal unless aiming for the keeper when trying to save a shot.

7. FREE KICKS (FK) a) A free kick is conceded if a player hits the free kick (FK) circle (unless playing dice rule 14.). b) If a player hits the FK circle on their defensive side of half-way then they have conceded a free kick for the opponent which results in the opponent being given an opportunity to have a shot at the goal (rule 5.) c) If you hit the FK circle at halfway or on your attacking side of halfway then you have conceded a defensive free kick. Possession is turned over at the circle the player was aiming for.

8. PENALTY KICKS a) A penalty is conceded when a player hits either the red card or the yellow card in their defensive goal mouth. The rules for yellow and red cards apply (rule 10. or rule 11.). b) If a penalty is conceded the attacking player gets one dart to shoot at goal. If the attacking player hits the goal a goal is scored. The defensive player does not have a chance to save.

9. CORNER KICK a) A corner kick is conceded if (rule 2h. or rule 5d.) occurs. b) To take a corner the attacking player chooses a corner kick target zone to aim for. Should they hit this with one of their three darts the corner kick is registered and a shot is allowed (rule 5.). c) Should the player not get a shooting opportunity with their three darts, possession is turned over to the nearest defensive circle from where the corner was attempted,

10. YELLOW CARDS a) If a player hits a yellow card target zone, possession will automatically be turned over to the opposition player at the positional target zone that was being aimed for. The positional target zone being aimed for will also be assigned a V (slash). Should a second yellow card be dealt to the same positional target zone, the target zone is given an λ Χ' (double slash) and is no longer available to the offending player for the duration of the match. 11. RED CARDS a) If a player hits a red card target zone, possession will automatically be turned over to the opposition player at the positional target zone that was being aimed for. The positional target zone being aimed for will also be assigned an 'X' (on the player who hit the red cards team sheet) assigning that circle a red card. Once a circle is assigned a red card this circle is no longer available to the offending player for the duration of the match. b) Should a player's turn start from a positional target zone where they have a red card, the player must choose a positional target zone which is one closer to their goal. In the case of a defensive positional target zone, the player must choose the other defensive positional target zone. c) If either the red or yellow card target zones are hit while in the defensive half of the dart board, a penalty is conceded (8.) and all other yellow and red card rules still apply. d) A goal keeper cannot be assigned a red card and taken off the board unless the goal keeper was the intended target of the offending dart. 12. INJURIES a) An injury occurs when a player hits an injury (INJ) circle (unless playing dice rule 14.). If this occurs, the player's turn is over. This player is now only able to use two darts in general play until they make a substitution (rule 13.).

13. SUBSTITUTIONS (SUB) a) In order to make a substitution a player needs to hit one of the substitution (SUB) target zones. A player may need or want to make a substitution if: i) . a player is injured (rule 12.), or ii) . if a player (a particular positional target zone) has a yellow card (rule 10.). b) In the event of a player being substituted an X is assigned to one substitute positional target zone on the team sheet. c) A player who is injured will either use their third dart (the one not allowed for general play) to try to make a substitution. The player may also use all three darts. d) Only 3 substitutions are allowed per game, per team. If a player uses all three substitutions and gets injured, that player can only use two darts for the remainder of the game. e) When attempting a substitution the out rule (rule 3a.) does not apply.

14. DICE RULES a) As an alternate to playing the injury and free kick rules when landing on those circles, the dice can be played. b) In the event of the dice being unavailable, the dots on a six sided dice can be represented by:

1. a foul - a free kick is awarded 2. a Hollywood - a free kick is conceded

3. referee abuse - a yellow card is conceded

4. head butt - a free kick is awarded, a red card is issued

5. a dive - a free kick is conceded

6. a hack - a player is injured.

15. HANDICAP RULES a) Some or all HARD RULES can be applied to one player in order to give the lesser player an advantage.

Rules must be agreed upon before the start of a game but can be altered during a game if both parties agree.

16. FINISHING THE GAME a) The match is over if a predetermined time limit is achieved or a predetermined top score is achieved. b) If the score is tied then a penalty shoot out is performed. The player who started the game will go first. Each player will take alternate turns to throw five darts at the opposition goal and the winner will be the player who scores the most goals. If the score is tied after five darts then the players will continue to alternately throw darts at the opposition goal in a sudden death shootout.

Figure 12 shows a process of playing a game using the board of the invention. In a first step a player begins the game according to any of the rules described above. In the second step the player interacts with the game board to play a game. In the third step rules of the game are applied according to any of the rules described above with particular reference to the target zone struck by a player. The resultant fourth step is that the game being played using darts emulates a game played on a sports field, court or arena.

The game board advantageously provides for a ball sport, field sport or like sport such as ice hockey, to be emulated. The arrangement of the target zones reflects the positional nature of many ball sports and factors such as the nature of players marking other players. During marking a first player has an area of control where they can manoeuvre or pass a ball and another player has an area of control where they can defend manoeuvring or passing of the ball. The area a player controls often envelope or limit the range of areas of other players another which is similar. This factor is mimicked by the concentric nature of many of the target zones on the game board in that a player may be aiming for one target zone, yet is restricted by the target zone of another player which is close or enveloping.

In addition, the game board reflects the scenario of a ball sport where there are typically more players positioned in defence than in offense. Further as a player travels in a more offensive direction on a sports field the range of space between them and goal is narrowed. It is therefore more difficult for a player or team of players to attack than it is to defend by virtue of the playing space and passing options available to a player with the ball. The game board reflects this scenario by providing less surface area, or at least a harder to strike target area from the defensive to the offensive direction on the game board. Where in the foregoing description reference has been made to elements or integers having known equivalents, then such equivalents are included as if they were individually set forth. Although the invention has been described by way of example and with reference to particular embodiments, it is to be understood that modifications and/or improvements may be made without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as defined by the claims.
