The invention relates to a method for operating a gas compressor (1') which can be driven via a coupling (38) by a driveshaft (62) of a drive motor (63), having a cylinder (20), a cylinder head (8; 32) and a piston (4) which is able to move in the cylinder, and having an intake space (5) and an outlet space (6) which are formed in the cylinder head (8; 32), having an intake valve (10), which is arranged at the cylinder head (8; 32) and operates in the manner of a non-return valve, and such an outlet valve (18), wherein there is formed between the cylinder (20), the piston (4) and the cylinder head (8; 32) a compression space (7), wherein, when the outlet valve (18) is closed, gas is drawn into the compression space (7) from the intake space (5) via the open intake valve (10), wherein, when the intake valve (10) is closed and the outlet valve (18) is closed, the gas drawn in is compressed, and wherein the compressed gas is fed via the open outlet valve (18) and the outlet space (6) into an outflow line (53) which is connected to the gas compressor (1') and guides the compressed air to at least one consumer. In order to avoid undesired piston movement when the gas compressor is switched off, it is provided that, in order to immobilise the gas compressor (1, 1', 1''), the coupling (38) is opened, and that then an auxiliary valve (39, 39', 39'') is opened, by means of which valve compressed gas present in the compression space (7) is discharged from the latter.
