Provided is a gear for a transmission such that no involute curved surfaces are achieved on tooth surfaces; that no trochoidal curved surfaces are achieved on tooth bottom surfaces; that instead, free curved surfaces are achieved on the tooth surfaces and the tooth bottom surfaces; that bearing fatigue strength is improved by reducing Hertzian stresses in the vicinity of tooth surface engagement points; that furthermore, bending fatigue strength is improved by reducing bending stresses in the vicinity of the tooth roots of the tooth bottom surfaces; and that moreover, the occurrence of gear noise is restricted. This gear for the transmission is characterized in that the tooth surfaces consist of free curved surfaces where the minimum radius of curvature in the vicinity of engagement pitch points is maximized, and that the tooth base surfaces consist of free curved surfaces where the minimum radius of curvature in the vicinity of the tooth roots is maximized.
