The gesture detection method comprises: shrinking and performing background modeling on a first original image so as to generate a first background image (S10); on the basis of the first background image, determining an area of motion of the first background image (S12); according to the area of motion of the first background image, determining a first gesture detection area in the first original image (S14); performing gesture detection within the first gesture detection area (S16).
