Abstract:
Disclosed is a GI-type optical fiber having excellent transparency and good flexibility and capable of achieving high-speed communication, which utilizes chlorostyrene as a main component of monomers that constitute a core part. Specifically disclosed is a GI-type optical fiber comprising a core part and a clad part arranged around the outer periphery of the core part, wherein the core part comprises a polymer containing a chlorostyrene monomer at a ratio of 55% by weight or more and a dopant and the clad part comprises a polymer of monomers containing methyl methacrylate at a ratio of 35% by weight or more. Also specifically disclosed is a process for producing a GI-type optical fiber utilizing a chlorostyrene polymer in a core part, which involves a step of removing aniline from monomers including chlorostyrene and/or a step of removing dissolved oxygen from monomers including chlorostyrene.
