Description:
GLAND ARRANGEMENT

This invention concerns a gland arrangement for securing the end of a flexible conduit of the kind whose outer surface is defined by spaced circumferential ribs separated by circumferential grooves to communicate with an aperture in a wall or plate. Such a conduit will be referred to hereinafter simply as a corrugated conduit.

Conventional such arrangements employ threaded nuts requiring spanners or other tools for their assembly or disassembly.

According to the present invention there is provided a gland arrangement for securing the end of a flexible corrugated conduit to communicate with an aperture in a wall or plate, comprising a first part having a tubular portion extending from an outwardly directed flange adapted to be located against an inner surface of said wall or plate with the tubular portion projecting outwardly through the aperture means allowing the tubular portion to expand to enable the end of the conduit to be pushed thereinto, tooth means on the interior of the tubular portion adapted to engage with a groove between adjacent ribs of the conduit and a second part in the form of a collar adapted to be slid over the conduit to lockingly engage the outer periphery of said tubular portion to prevent expansion thereof and removal of the conduit.

The means allowing the tubular portion to expand may comprise a plurality of spaced axial slits therein.

The tooth means on the interior portion may comprise a circumferential rib.

The outer periphery of the tubular portion may present a plurality of spaced circumferential ribs separated by grooves engageable by a circumferential tooth on the inner periphery of said second part.

The tooth on the second part may be of saw-tooth section permitting assembly, but not disassembly.

The tooth on the second part may be of rounded section permitting both assembly and disassembly.

Resilient washers may be provided between the flange and wall and/or between the wall and second part.

An O-ring may be located within a groove on a portion of the conduit located within the tubular portion of the first part.

It will be understood that the entire arrangement may be assembled by hand without need for any tool.

The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which shows, by way of example only, a cross-section through one form of gland arrangement embodying same.

Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that one end of a corrugated flexible conduit 10 communicates with an aperture 1 1 in a wall or plate 12.

A first part comprising a tubular portion 14 having an outwardly directed flange 1 1 at one end is provided. The flange 15 is adapted to locate against the inner surface of the wall or plate 12, possibly through the intermediary of a resilient washer 16, with the tubular portion 14 projecting outwardly from the wall or plate 12.

The outer regions of the portion 14 are able to expand, four equi-angularly spaced axially extending slits 20 being provided therein for this purpose and to enable

an end of the conduit 10 to be pushed into the portion 14. A circumferential tooth 21 on the inner periphery of the portion 14 engages with successive grooves 22 on the outer periphery of the conduit 10 as it is pushed into the portion 14.

A second part in the form of a collar 30 may be slid over the conduit 10 to surround the tubular portion 14, and possibly compress a resilient washer 31 between its inner end face and the wall or plate 12.

The outer periphery of the tubular portion 14 presents a plurality of spaced circumferential ribs 40 separated by grooves 41 which are successively engaged by a circumferential tooth 50 on the inner periphery of the collar 30.

Once the collar 30 is in position, expansion of the tubular portion 14 and removal of the conduit 10 is prevented.

The tooth 50 may be of saw-tooth section preventing disassembly or rounded (as shown) to allow both assembly and disassembly.

An O-ring 60 may be provided in one of the grooves of that part of the conduit 10 located within the tubular portion 14.

It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
