Abstract:
A glass panel unit (9) having a depressurized internal space (85) is provided by means of a structure thanks to which the glass panel unit has no trace of an air discharge pipe. This glass panel unit manufacturing method involves a bonding step, an insertion step, a depressurization step, and a sealing step. In the bonding step, a first substrate (81) in which an air discharge hole (815) is formed and a second substrate (82) are bonded together with a frame-shape bonding member (83) interposed therebetween, and an internal space (85) is formed. In the insertion step, a sealing material (89) is inserted into the air discharge hole (815). In the depressurization step, an air discharge device (1) having a pressure meter (4; 41) is connected to the air discharge hole (815), and the air discharge device (1) is driven to depressurize the internal space (85). In the sealing step, while maintaining the internal space (85) in the reduced-pressure state, the sealing material (89) is heated and the air discharge hole (815) is sealed by means of the softened sealing material (89). In the sealing step, while heating the sealing material (89), measured values of the pressure meter (4; 41) are monitored; on the basis of change in the measured values, it is detected when the sealing material (89) has softened, and heating of the sealing material (89) is stopped.
