When a hair style simulation image is created by combining a face image and a hair image, the hair image showing an arbitrary hair style is automatically and simply combined without marring the naturalness of the fitting regardless of whether or not the hair partly hides the face. A hair style simulation image by combining a face image and a hair image is created as follows. The eyes of the face image are detected. From the line (eye line) (L1) passing through the eyes and a face width (D0) which is a predetermined integral multiple of the distance between the eyes, a semiegg-shaped curve (L0) is drawn as a temporary outline of the face. The face image is scanned with the semiegg-shaped curve (L0) horizontally. From the degree of superposition of the semiegg-shaped curve (L0) and the edge line (La) of the jaw, the left and right ends (Pb, Pc) of the face outline are detected. Similarly, for the hair image, the left and right ends (Pb, Pc) of the outline are detected. The widths (D1f, D1h) between the left and right ends (Pb, Pc) of the face outline of both images are made equal and the images are combined thereby to create the hair style simulation image.
