Abstract:
A hand dryer (1) includes: a water receiving unit (11) that is removably attachable to a box body (3) and collects water blown off of a hand inserted into a processing space; a hand detection sensor (10) that has an infrared emitting element for emitting infrared light and an infrared receiving element for outputting a signal indicating the quantity of infrared light received; and a control unit (20) for determining whether a hand is inserted into the processing space, and if so, drives a high pressure air generating device (4). The control unit (20) periodically updates an upper limit threshold that is used to determine whether a hand is inserted into the processing space on the basis of a reference value based on a sensor input value which is the quantity of infrared light received as indicated by the signal input from the hand detection sensor (10), and when the sensor input value is at or above the upper limit threshold, determines that a hand is inserted into the processing space, and when the sensor input value is at or lower than a lower limit threshold that is used to determine whether the water receiving unit (11) is attached to the box body (3), stops the update of the upper limit threshold.
