Title:
A HAND WINDING FOR WINDING AND UNWINDING OF A LINE OR CABLE
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1986/005469
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
Hand winder for winding and unwinding of a line, cable or the like and comprising a handle portion and a carrier portion for carrying the line or cable (5). In order to provide for a simple fast and powerful retraction and winding of the line (5) but also a similarly fast, simple and reliable pay-out of the line when required, it is suggested according to the invention that the carrier portion comprises two parallel carrier studs (1) in mutually spaced relationship, said studs each at one end being secured to one end of a pay-out handle (2), included in the handle portion, and protruding freely therefrom, and in that the handle portion comprises a pull-in handle (3), arranged in parallel spaced relationship to the pay-out handle (2) and the longitudinal axis of which substantially intersects the central perpendicular line to each of the carrier studs (1).

Description:
A HAND WINDER FOR WINDING AND UNWINDING OF A LINE OR CABLE.

The present invention refers to a hand winder for winding and unwinding of a line, cable or the like and comprising a handle portion and a carrier portion for carrying the line or cable.

Handling of lines, wires, cables, hoses etc of¬ ten causes substantial problems. Many times e.g. a line lies stored either loosely in circular configuration or wound on a bobbin or reel. When lying in a circular con¬ figuration the line etc easily gets entangled when being paid out. Should the line etc be wound on a spool or reel there occurs problems to get the line to be paid out suf¬ ficiently fast particularly when it is desired to throw out the line and thereby achieve a substantial length of the throw. When the line later is to be retracted or re¬ wound, this most often has to be made by hand and then the line is liable to make cuts in the hands at the same time as it may turn out to be difficult to seize the line re¬ liably, particularly if the same is dirty or wet and most particularly when handling in cold weather. In such a re¬ traction of a line by hand there is mostly obtained a loose tangle of the line lying in front of the feet, which might be dangerous in certain situations of work. Prior reels, bobbins or the like hitherto known for winding and stor¬ ing of lines, cables or the like are not either designed for allowing an effective and fast retraction of the line.

As examples of winding and unwinding devices for lines, cables and the like of conventional kind it might be referred to the French patent publication 2,390,360 and the US A 4,261,529.

The present invention now aims at remedying the above-stated drawbacks in prior reels and this is obtained according to the invention substantially in that the carrier portion comprises two parallel carrier studs in

mutually spaced relationship, said studs each at one end being secured to one end of a pay-out handle included in the handle portion and protruding freely therefrom and in that the handle portion comprises a pull-in handle arran¬ ged in parallel spaced relationship to the pay-out handle and the longitudinal axis of which substantially intersects the central perpendicular line to each of the carrier studs.

Owing to the invention a line or cable now can be easily wound onto the winder while using the pull-in handle, which thereby allows the application of even very great pulling forces on the line, should so be required. When the line then is to be paid out, one shifts the grip and by instead seizing the pay-out handle the carrier studs will point in the direction of pay-out of the line so that the same can be paid out easily and freely. By seizing the pay-out handle and pull-in handle with either hand one can furthermore rapidly shift between retraction of the line or paying out of the same. The winder according to the present invention also has a number of further advantages which will be apparent to artisans, and in the present connection it is only to be added that owing to the fact that the win¬ der is lacking movable portions whatsoever the same will have almost infinite life.

The invention will be further described below with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1a is a plan view and Fig. 1b is a side elevational view of a winder according to the invention. Fig. 2 illustrates the winder according to Fig. 1 while winding of a line thereon while Figs. 3a-d diagrammatically illustrate the principle of winding of a line onto the hand winder similarly to Fig. 2, Fig. 4 finally illustrating the winder while poin¬ ting with its studs in the direction of pay-out of the line.

As is evident from the drawing a hand winder according to the invention comprises a handle portion and a carrier portion for carrying the line or cable. The car-
