Abstract:
A Handlebar safety device (10) which attaches to a handlebar (12)includes a sleeve (14) which is received over the handlebar, a bias member retainer housing (18) is coupled to one end of the sleeve (14). A bias member (22) biases the bias member retainer housing (18) from the end cap (16). Upon impact of the rider with the handlebar safety device (10), the bias member (22) compresses and absorbs energy generated by the impact. If the impact force is greater than a predetermined amount, the bias member retainer housing (18) can fail or break to prevent the biase member from rebounding into the rider.
