Abstract:
Provided is a piston ring having a hard carbon coating film which can be easily formed in the same batch step, suffers no interlaminar separation, and is excellent in terms of initial affinity and wear resistance.
The hard carbon coating film is formed on at least the peripheral sliding surface of a piston ring base and contains substantially no hydrogen. The hard carbon coating film has an sp2 component proportion of 40-80% when analyzed by a combination of a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), i.e., TEM-EELS spectrum, and contains 0.1-10.0% microparticles in terms of the areal proportion thereof in the surface of the hard carbon coating film.
