Abstract:
An A layer 32 which is a single-composition layer having one of an A composition (nitride of AlCrSiα), a B composition (nitride of CrBSiβ), and a C composition (nitride of AlCr(SiC)γ), and two-nanolayer-alternating layers 38, 40 each provided by alternately laminating two from among nanolayers of the A composition, the B composition, and the C composition (nanolayer A layer 32n, nanolayer B layer 34n, and nanolayer C layer 36n), are laminated in alternation at predetermined film thicknesses for each. This results in an excellent wear resistance, toughness, lubricity, and welding resistance, and provides, for example, an excellent durability even in cutting operations on titanium alloys. This has made it possible, due to a high toughness, to prevent cracking and debonding of hard coating and realize an extended tool life in cutting operations on a variety of cutting workpieces, e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and alloy steels, in addition to titanium alloys, or under severe processing conditions, e.g., high speed processing or dry processing.
