Abstract:
The purpose of the invention is to reduce degradation in image quality of a head-up display (HUD) due to sunlight incident on the HUD. The invention provides an HUD which projects video light onto a projection surface so that the projection surface reflects a virtual image derived from the video light toward a user eye box for viewing the virtual image, the HUD comprising a housing, a housing opening that is formed in the housing and allows video light to be output therethrough, a video display device that is accommodated in the housing and forms and outputs the video light, and an optical element arranged on the optical path of the video light extending from the video display device to the housing opening, wherein at least one surface of the optical element is formed into a free-form surface, and, of the sunlight entering through the housing opening, beams reflected from the free-form surface and entering the eye box have an average luminance of less than or equal to 1/10th the maximum luminance of the video light at a solid angle of 0.03 degrees.
