Abstract:
Disclosed is a heat-assisted recording-use magnetic head of high light utilization efficiency which is capable of illuminating a magnetic recording medium with light that has been reduced to a spot size of submicron-order. At a position adjacent to a main magnetic pole (19) within a magnetic head, a spot-size converter (13) for guiding light emitted from a light source (4) to within the magnetic head is provided. The spot-size converter (13) is such that, between a core (14) and a cladding material (24), a cover layer (15) having a refractive index lower than the core (14) and the cladding material (24) is formed, wherein the core has been made into a form which combines a substantially rectangular shape, with respect to the direction of travel of light, with a shape in which the width of the core tapers out toward the bottom surface of the magnetic head.
