Abstract:
An evaporator (11) for effecting heat exchange between exhaust gases leaving the exhaust port (16B) of an internal combustion engine and water comprises a number of heat transfer plates (83) laminated with a predetermined spacing, perpendicular to the paper, left therebetween, and a number of pipe members (90) extending through these heat transfer plates (83) and zigzag connected together at their opposite ends, wherein exhaust gas passageways (87, 88, 89) are defined between the heat transfer plates (83) by partition walls (86) with raised portions, which are formed on the heat transfer plates (83), abutting against each other. The exhaust gases leaving the exhaust port (16B) pass through the exhaust gas passageways (87, 88, 89), and during this passage, heat exchange with water flowing through the pipe members (90) is effected, so that the water receiving the heat energy of the exhaust gases becomes high temperature high pressure steam. This improves the heat exchange efficiency by increasing the heat transfer area of the evaporator (11) to the highest degree.
