This heat insulating structure for an internal combustion engine (engine 1) is provided with: a cylinder head-side heat insulating cover 30 that has first side wall parts 32 which face, with intervals therebetween, both side surfaces of a cylinder head 2 and a cylinder block 3 in the vehicle width direction and which respectively cover both of the side surfaces; and a cylinder block-side heat insulating cover 40 that has second side wall parts 43 which respectively cover both side surfaces of the cylinder block 3 in the vehicle width direction. The first side wall parts 32 form predetermined gaps in the vehicle width direction with the second side wall parts 43, are positioned further to the outside in the vehicle width direction than the second side wall parts 43, extend downward further than the upper end parts of the second side wall parts 43, and overlap the second side wall part 43 when viewed from both sides of the vehicle.
