Abstract:
The invention pertains to the techniques for removing nitrogen oxides (NOx) contained in the exhaust gas discharged from boilers or the like. When the exhaust gas temperature is 100 �C or below, preferred is a heat treated activated carbon prepared by heat-treating an activated carbon as the raw material in a nonoxidizing atmosphere at 600 to 1200 �C and removing the oxygen-containing functional groups present on the surface thereof to lower the atomic ratio of the surface oxygen to the surface carbon below 0.05. When the exhaust gas temperature exceeds 100 �C, preferred is a heat treated activated carbon prepared by heat-treating an activated carbon as the raw material in a nonoxidizing atmosphere at 600 to 1200 �C and activating the surface of the activated carbon with sulfuric or nitric acid to give rise to oxidizable oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface.
