Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process for heat forging martensitic stainless steels with very high carbon content, between 1.2 and 2.1 % by mass of said element and chromium in excess of 12 % by mass, in order to produce infibered structures. The proposed process is carried out in six steps: 1) fabrication and cutting of billets, sheets or bars; 2) heating at very high temperature followed by slow cooling in a protected argon atmosphere, or with the part introduced into a sealed refractory alumina ladle containing a mixture of graphite (60-70 % by mass) and barium carbonate (30-40 % by mass); 3) heat forging and finish machining; 4) quenching and final machining; 5) quality control, certification and engraving of the trade mark; 6) cleaning and final preparation of the surface by chemical etching. The heat forging at temperatures which oscillate between cherry red and blood red, that is to say between 650 and 850 DEG C is effected by hammering, either with a power-hammer or with a manual forging hammer or in a combined way with both. In some cases, it is possible to intercalate a heat lamination step in the same range of temperatures. The sharpening process is carried out with the use of a sharpening water stone or by conventional process. The main application of this process is the fabrication of steel weapons for sport, decorative, military, hunting users, etc., or for work tools with high tenacity and wear-resistant cutting edge, for high wear-resistant mechanical parts, tools for machine-tools, any type of tool used in mechanical workshops, etc.
