Abstract:
Provided is a heating method of a honeycomb structure that enables the honeycomb structure to satisfactorily generate heat with little temperature irregularity during the heat generation and with a small amount of power consumption. This heating method of a honeycomb structure has a heat-generation process in which electric power is supplied to a honeycomb structure section (4) of the honeycomb structure (100) in order to heat the honeycomb structure section (4) to a target temperature, said honeycomb structure (100) comprising the honeycomb structure section (4), which has a cylindrical shape, has porous partitions (1) for compartmentalizing multiple cells (2) and an external wall (3) located on the outermost periphery and generates heat when electricity is applied, and a catalyst (7) that is supported by the partitions (1) of the honeycomb structure section (4). In the heat-generation process, a power supply reduction period, during which either the supplying of the electric power to the honeycomb structure section (4) is stopped or the electric power supplied to the honeycomb structure section (4) is reduced, is provided at least once before the lowest temperature of the heat-generating section of the honeycomb structure section (4) reaches the target temperature.
