WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A protective headwear comprising: a shell comprising a cavity defining an opening and being in fluid communication with the inside of said shell; and a door member mounted to said shell about said opening, said door member being moveable between a closed position for substantially sealing said opening and at least one open position so as to provide a door opening for allowing air to enter said shell, wherein said door member is moveable towards said at least one open position when being pushed into said cavity.
2. A protective headwear according to claim 1 , wherein said door member is pivotally mounted to said shell.
3. A protective headwear according to claim 2, wherein said door member comprises an edge thereof having a pivot, said pivot being pivotally mounted to said shell.
4. A protective headwear according to claim 2, wherein said door member comprises a front edge thereof having a pivot, said pivot being pivotally mounted to said shell.
5. A protective headwear according to claim 1 , further comprises a frame mounted to said shell about said opening, said frame defining a frame opening being contiguous with said shell opening, said door member being moveably connect to said frame about said frame opening.
6. A protective headwear according to claim 5, wherein said door member is pivotally mounted to said frame.
7. A protective headwear according to claim 6, wherein said door member comprises an edge thereof having a pivot, said pivot being pivotally mounted to said frame.
8. A protective headwear according to claim 7, wherein said door member comprises a front edge thereof having a pivot, said pivot being pivotally mounted to said shell.
9. A protective headwear according to claim 8, wherein said front edge comprises a extension members carrying said pivot.
10. A protective headwear according to claim 5, wherein said cavity defines internal walls, said internal walls being configured to receive said frame.
11. A protective headwear according to claim 10, wherein said frame comprises snap members to be fitted within complementary receiving apertures formed within said inner walls.
12. A protective headwear according to claim 1 , wherein said door member is biased towards said closed position.
13. A protective headwear according to claim 12, further comprising at least one biasing member for biasing said door member towards said closed position.
14. A protective headwear according to claim 13, wherein said biasing member is mounted between a floor formed within said cavity and an underside of said door member.
15. A protective headwear according to claim 13, wherein said biasing member is a spring member.
16. A protective headwear according to claim 1 , wherein said door member comprises at least one stopper member for stopping said door member from moving beyond said opening away from said cavity.
17. A protective headwear according to claim 16, wherein said at least one said stopper abuts an underside of said shell about said opening thereby stopping said door member from moving beyond said opening away from said cavity.
18. A protective headwear according to claim 16, further comprising a frame mounted to said shell about said opening, said frame defining a frame opening being contiguous with said shell opening, said door member being moveably connected to said frame about said frame opening, said at least one stopper abutting an underside of said frame about said frame opening thereby stopping said door member from moving beyond said opening away from said cavity.
19. A protective headwear according to claim 1 , wherein said door member comprises a door-positioning member for engaging at least one stopper within said cavity so as to be positioned at said at least one open position.
20. A protective headwear according to claim 19, comprising a first and a second said stopper within said cavity for being engaged by said door-positioning member thereby positioning said door member at a respective first and second said open position.
21. A protective headwear according to claim 20, wherein said second open position provides a wider said door opening than said first open position.
22. A protective headwear according to claim 20, wherein said door-positioning member comprises a flexible fin.
23. A protective headwear according to claim 20, wherein at least one stopper comprises a shoulder formed between an embossment and a groove.
24. A protective headwear according to claim 1 , further comprising a moveable positioning member mounted to said shell about an aperture thereof leading to said cavity and being adjacently positioned relative to said opening, said positioning member comprising at least one stopper positioned within said cavity, said door member comprising door- positioning member for engaging said at least one stopper thereby positioning said door member at said open position.
25. A protective headwear according to claim 24, wherein said moveable positioning member is so moveable as to provide said at least one stopper to disengage said door-positioning element when moved.
26. A protective headwear according to claim 25, wherein said moveable positioning member comprises a lever being externally mounted to said shell about said aperture for manual movement of said moveable positioning member.
27. A protective headwear according to claim 24, wherein said moveable positioning member is biased towards said door-positioning member.
28. A protective headwear according to claim 25, wherein said moveable positioning member comprises a lever being externally mounted to said shell about said aperture for manual movement of said moveable positioning member against said bias.
29. A protective headwear according to claim 27, wherein a biasing member is mounted to said moveable positioning member for biasing said moveable positioning member towards said door-positioning member.
30. A protective headwear according to claim 29, wherein said biasing member comprises a spring.
31. A protective headwear according to claim 25, wherein said moveable positioning member comprises a frontal portion comprising said at least one stopper mounted within said cavity.
32. A protective headwear according to claim 31 , wherein said front portion comprises at least a first said stopper and a second said stopper for being engaged by said door-positioning member thereby positioning said door member at a respective first and second said open position.
33. A protective headwear according to claim 32, wherein said second open position provides a wider said door opening than said first open position.
34. A protective headwear according to claim 32, wherein each said first and second stoppers comprises a respective a shoulder formed between an embossment and a groove, said door-positioning member configured to slide along said embossment.
35. A protective headwear according to claim 25, further comprising a frame mounted to said shell about said opening, said frame defining a frame opening being contiguous with said shell opening, said door member being moveably connected to said frame about said frame opening, said frame comprising said shell aperture, said moveable positioning member mounted to said frame.
36. A protective headwear according to claim 35, wherein said door member comprises least one stopper abutting an underside of said frame about said frame opening thereby stopping said door member from moving beyond said opening away from said cavity.
37. A protective headwear according to claim 35, wherein said moveable positioning member is so moveable about said frame as to provide said at least one stopper to disengage said door-positioning element when moved.
38. A protective headwear according to claim 35, wherein said moveable positioning member comprises a lever being externally mounted to said frame about said aperture for manual movement of said moveable positioning member.
39. A protective headwear according to claim 35, wherein said moveable positioning member is biased towards said door-positioning member via a biasing member mounted to said positioning member and said frame.
40. A protective headwear according to claim 1 , wherein said opening defined a wider front portion and narrower back portion, said door member comprising a wider front portion moveably connected to said shell about said wider opening front portion and a narrower back portion, said narrower back portion being so biased as to close said narrower back opening.
41. A protective headwear comprising: a shell comprising a cavity defining an opening and being in fluid communication with the inside of said shell; and a door member mounted to said shell about said opening; wherein said door member is moveable between a closed position sealing said opening and at least a first and a second open position thereby providing a respective first and second door opening for allowing air to enter said shell, said second door opening being wider than said first door opening.
42. A protective headwear according to claim 1 , wherein said door member is pivotally mounted to said shell.
43. A protective headwear according to claim 42, wherein said door member comprises an edge thereof having a pivot, said pivot being pivotally mounted to said shell.
44. A protective headwear according to claim 42, wherein said door member comprises a front edge thereof having a pivot, said pivot being pivotally mounted to said shell.
45. A protective headwear according to claim 41 , further comprises a frame mounted to said shell about said opening, said frame defining a frame opening being contiguous with said shell opening, said door member being moveably connect to said frame about said frame opening.
46. A protective headwear according to claim 45, wherein said door member is pivotally mounted to said frame.
47. A protective headwear according to claim 46, wherein said door member comprises an edge thereof having a pivot, said pivot being pivotally mounted to said frame.
48. A protective headwear according to claim 47, wherein said door member comprises a front edge thereof having a pivot, said pivot being pivotally mounted to said shell.
49. A protective headwear according to claim 48, wherein said front edge comprises a extension members carrying said pivot.
50. A protective headwear according to claim 45, wherein said cavity defines internal walls, said internal walls being configured to receive said frame.
51. A protective headwear according to claim 50, wherein said frame comprises snap members to be fitted within complementary receiving apertures formed within said inner walls.
52. A protective headwear according to claim 41 , wherein said door member is biased towards said closed position.
53. A protective headwear according to claim 52, further comprising at least one biasing member for biasing said door member towards said closed position.
54. A protective headwear according to claim 53, wherein said biasing member is mounted between a floor formed within said cavity and an underside of said door member.
55. A protective headwear according to claim 53, wherein said biasing member is a spring member.
56. A protective headwear according to claim 41 , wherein said door member comprises at least one stopper member for stopping said door member from moving beyond said opening away from said cavity.
57. A protective headwear according to claim 56, wherein said at least one said stopper abuts an underside of said shell about said opening thereby stopping said door member from moving beyond said opening away from said cavity.
58. A protective headwear according to claim 56, further comprising a frame mounted to said shell about said opening, said frame defining a frame opening being contiguous with said shell opening, said door member being moveably connected to said frame about said frame opening, said at least one stopper abutting an underside of said frame about said frame opening thereby stopping said door member from moving beyond said opening away from said cavity.
59. A protective headwear according to claim 41 , wherein said door member comprises a door-positioning member for engaging at least a first and a second stopper within said cavity so as to be positioned at said at least said first and second open positions.
60. A protective headwear according to claim 41 , further comprising a moveable positioning member mounted to said shell about an aperture thereof leading to said cavity and being adjacently positioned relative to said opening, said positioning member comprising at least one stopper positioned within said cavity, said door member comprising door- positioning member for engaging said at least one stopper thereby positioning said door member at said open position.
61. A protective headwear according to claim 60, wherein said moveable positioning member is so moveable as to provide said at least one stopper to disengage said door-positioning element when moved.
62. A protective headwear according to claim 62, wherein said moveable positioning member comprises a lever being externally mounted to said shell about said aperture for manual movement of said moveable positioning member.
63. A protective headwear according to claim 60, wherein said moveable positioning member is biased towards said door-positioning member.
64. A protective headwear according to claim 61 , wherein said moveable positioning member comprises a lever being externally mounted to said shell about said aperture for manual movement of said moveable positioning member against said bias.
65. A protective headwear according to claim 61 , wherein a biasing member is mounted to said moveable positioning member for biasing said moveable positioning member towards said door-positioning member.
66. A protective headwear according to claim 60, wherein said moveable positioning member comprises a frontal portion comprising said first and second stoppers mounted within said cavity.
67. A protective headwear according to claim 66, wherein each said first and second stoppers comprises a respective shoulder formed between an embossment and a groove, said door-positioning member configured to slide along said embossment.
68. A protective headwear according to claim 60, further comprising a frame mounted to said shell about said opening, said frame defining a frame opening being contiguous with said shell opening, said door member being moveably connected to said frame about said frame opening, said frame comprising said shell aperture, said moveable positioning member mounted to said frame.
69. A protective headwear according to claim 41 , wherein said opening defined a wider front portion and narrower back portion, said door member comprising a wider front portion moveably connected to said shell about said wider opening front portion and a narrower back portion, said narrower back portion being so biased as to close said narrower back opening.
70. A protective headwear comprising: a shell comprising a cavity defining an opening and being in fluid communication with the inside of said shell; a door member mounted to said shell about said opening and being moveable between a closed position for substantially sealing said opening and at least one open position so as to provide a door opening for allowing air to enter said shell; and a moveable positioning member mounted to said shell and being so moveable as to engage said door member and to be disengaged therefrom, wherein when said moveable positioning member engages said door member, said door member is positioned at said at least one open position and when said moveable positioning member is disengaged therefrom, said door member is released from said at least one open position.
71. A protective headwear according to claim 70, wherein said door member is pivotally mounted to said shell.
72. A protective headwear according to claim 70, further comprises a frame mounted to said shell about said opening, said frame defining a frame opening being contiguous with said shell opening, said door member being moveably connect to said frame about said frame opening.
73. A protective headwear according to claim 72, wherein said door member is pivotally mounted to said frame.
74. A protective headwear according to claim 72, wherein said cavity defines internal walls, said internal walls being configured to receive said frame.
75. A protective headwear according to claim 1 , wherein said door member is biased towards said closed position.
76. A protective headwear according to claim 75, further comprising at least one biasing member for biasing said door member towards said closed position.
77. A protective headwear according to claim 76, wherein said biasing member is mounted between a floor formed within said cavity and an underside of said door member.
78. A protective headwear according to claim 70, wherein said door member comprises at least one stopper member for stopping said door member from moving beyond said opening away from said cavity.
79. A protective headwear according to claim 78, wherein said at least one said stopper abuts an underside of said shell about said opening thereby stopping said door member from moving beyond said opening away from said cavity.
80. A protective headwear according to claim 72, wherein said at least one stopper abuts an underside of said frame about said frame opening thereby stopping said door member from moving beyond said opening away from said cavity.
81. A protective headwear according to claim 70, wherein said door member comprises a door-positioning member for mutually engaging said moveable positioning member so as to be positioned at said at least one open position.
82. A protective headwear according to claim 81 , wherein said door-positioning member comprises a flexible fin.
83. A protective headwear according to claim 81 , said moveable positioning member comprises at least one stopper for being engaged by said door positioning member.
84. A protective headwear according to claim 83, wherein said at least one stopper comprises a shoulder formed between an embossment and a groove.
85. A protective headwear according to claim 70, wherein said moveable positioning member is mounted to said shell about an aperture thereof leading to said cavity and being adjacently positioned relative to said opening.
86. A protective headwear according to claim 85, wherein said positioning member comprises at least one stopper positioned within said cavity for mutually engaging said door member thereby positioning said door member at said open position.
87. A protective headwear according to claim 85, wherein said moveable positioning member comprises a lever being externally mounted to said shell about said aperture for manual movement of said moveable positioning member.
88. A protective headwear according to claim 70, wherein said moveable positioning member is biased towards a door member engaging position.
89. A protective headwear according to claim 88, wherein said moveable positioning member is manually movable against said bias so as to disengage said door member.
90. A protective headwear according to claim 88, wherein a biasing member is mounted to said moveable positioning member .
91. A protective headwear according to claim 90, wherein said biasing member comprises a spring.
92. A protective headwear according to claim 86, wherein said moveable positioning member comprises a frontal portion comprising said at least one stopper mounted within said cavity.
93. A protective headwear according to claim 92, wherein said frontal portion comprises at least a first said stopper and a second said stopper for mutually engaging said door member thereby positioning said door member at a respective first and second said open position.
94. A protective headwear according to claim 93, wherein said second open position provides a wider said door opening than said first open position.
95. A protective headwear according to claim 93, wherein each said first and second stoppers comprises a respective shoulder formed between an embossment and a groove, said door member configured to slide along a said embossment.
96. A protective headwear according to claim 72, wherein said moveable positioning member is mounted to said frame.

TITLE OF THE INVENTION
HELMET WITH A VENT MECHANISM
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a vent mechanism for a helmet. More particularly, the present invention relates to a helmet with a top vent mechanism.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Protective helmets for vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds, motorized tricycles, motor-crosses, bicycles and the like are well known. These helmets typically include an outer protective shell with internal resilient liner material for cushioning the wearer's head from impact. This protective liner material exhibits heat insulating properties. To alleviate heat retention in the helmet which causes discomfort to the user, holes and a plurality of frontal vents have been provided in the art.
[0003] A drawback of conventional vent mechanisms for protective headwear (e.g. helmets) is that it does not provide for an adequate top vent mechanism.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
[0004] An object of the invention is to provide an vent mechanism for protective headwear.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0005] In accordance with an aspect of the present invention there is provided a protective headwear comprising: a shell comprising a cavity defining an opening and being in fluid communication with the inside of the shell; and a door member mounted to the shell about the opening, the door member being moveable between a closed position for substantially sealing the opening and at least one open position so as to provide a door opening for allowing air to enter the shell, wherein the door member is moveable towards the at least one open position when being pushed into the cavity.
[0006] A protective headwear comprising: a shell comprising a cavity defining an opening and being in fluid communication with the inside of the shell; and a door member mounted to the shell about the opening; wherein the door member is moveable between a closed position sealing the opening and at least a first and a second open position thereby providing a respective first and second door opening for allowing air to enter the shell, the second door opening being wider than the first door opening.
[0007] A protective headwear comprising: a shell comprising a cavity defining an opening and being in fluid communication with the inside of the shell; a door member mounted to the shell about the opening and being moveable between a closed position for substantially sealing the opening and at least one open position so as to provide a door opening for allowing air to enter the shell; and a moveable positioning member mounted to the shell and being so moveable as to engage the door
member and to be disengaged therefrom, wherein when the moveable positioning member engages the door member, the door member is positioned at the at least one open position and when the moveable positioning member is disengaged therefrom, the door member is released from the at least one open position.
[0008] An advantage of the present invention is that it provides a top vent mechanism for selectively modulating the amount of air entering the helmet during modulation.
[0009] The term "protective headwear" should be construed herein to include without limitation a helmet, a protective headgear, and the like.
[0010] The expressions "first" and "second" are used herein for indicative purposes only and hence are interchangeable and furthermore not a limited to any given number of claimed elements.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0019] An illustrative embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in further details by the following non-limiting example.
[0020] Figures 1 , 2, 3 and 4 show a protective headwear such as a helmet 10 having a shell 12 with a face shield 14, a lower face guard 16 and a neck opening 18 at the underside of the helmet 10. Helmet 10 is
also shown having a vent mechanism 20 mounted to a top portion 22 thereof.
[0021] In this illustrated non-limiting example, the vent mechanism
20 is mounted on a motorcycle helmet, yet the skilled artisan will easily appreciate that the vent mechanism of the invention, such as vent mechanism 20, is not limited to a specific protective headwear type and can be mounted to a variety of protective headwear types as can be contemplated by the ordinary skilled artisan.
[0022] Turning now to Figures 1 and 5, an illustrative embodiment of vent mechanism 20 will now be described in accordance with the present invention.
[0023] The helmet includes an open cavity 24 at the top portion 22 thereof. Open cavity 24 defines a mouth rim 26, an inner peripheral wall 28 and floor 30 having an air inlet 32 leading to the inside of helmet 10. In this way, the mouth rim 26 defines an opening that leads into the cavity 26. As will be described herein, the helmet top cavity 24 is configured to receive a door member 34 about the opening thereof, as well as an outer frame 36 and a moveable positioning member 38.
[0024] In the present non-limiting illustration, the cavity 24, the door member 34, and the outer frame 36 are shown having a general triangular-like configuration, yet the skilled artisan will understand that other suitable shapes and designs can be contemplated within the context of the present invention.
[0025] The door member 34 includes a longitudinal pivot rod 40 extending from the front base edge 42 thereof, via extension members 44.
Pivot rod 40 is pivotally wedged within hinge-members (not shown) extending from the underside 46 (see Figure 5) of front base side 48 of frame 36.
[0026] Frame 36 defines an opening 37 and includes snap members 50 and 51 extending beyond the peripheral edge 52 thereof. Snap members 50 and 51 are so configured as to be snuggly fitted within receiving apertures 54 and 55 formed within the inner peripheral wall 28 of the open cavity 24. In the present exemplified construction, the frame 36 includes two front snap members 50 (only one shown in Figure 1 ) extending from its base side 48, as well as two rear snap members 51 (only one shown in Figure 1 ) near extending from its lateral sides 56 and 58. Correspondingly, the peripheral inner wall 28 includes two front receiving apertures 54 as well as two rear receiving apertures 55. The two rear receiving apertures 55 are formed within the respective to top sides 60 of the outwardly protruding lateral wall portions 62 and 64 of the inner peripheral wall 28. Of course, a variety of easily available ways of mounting the frame 36 to a helmet top cavity 24 can be contemplated by a person having ordinary skill in the art.
[0027] The cavity floor 30 also includes grooves 66 providing a space for the frame hinge-members pivotally holding the pivot rod 40 of the door member 34.
[0028] The door member 34 is hence pivotally movable within the vertical space provided by cavity 24 beneath the frame 36, as shown by arrow V (Figure 5), in relation to the frame 36 which is fixedly mounted to the helmet 10 about mouth rim 26. Accordingly, the door member 34 includes a pair of lateral stopper members or fins 68 and 70 respectively
extending from the lateral sides 72 and 74 thereof as well as a door- positioning member 76 also in the form of a fin and extending from the rear rounded tip 78 thereof. The inner wall 28 provides recessed portions 80 and 82, which respectively provide a clearance for fins 68 and 70 during movement of the door member 34.
[0029] The door member 34 is upwardly biased, as shown by arrow
U, via biasing members 84 in the form of springs in the illustrated example. In the exemplified construction, biasing springs 84 are mounted to the floor 30 at receiving holes 86 and 88 and are fixed to the underside 89 (see Figure 5) of the door member 34. Fins 68, 70 and 76 as well as extension members 44 abut the underside 46 (see Figure 5) of the frame 36 thereby stopping the door member 34 from being moved beyond the opening 37 defined by frame 36.
[0030] The positioning fin 76 of door member 34 acts with the positioning member 38 in order to position the door member 34 at predetermined positions as will be explained below.
[0031] The positioning member 38 is mounted to the frame 36 at the rear rounded tip portion 90 thereof (see Figure 1 ). Portion 90 includes an aperture 92 for receiving a ridge 94 upwardly extending from the positioning member 38. Aperture 92 provides a horizontal moving space for ridge 94 as shown by arrow H. Ridge 94 is fastened to a lever 96, via fastener 98. In this ways the lever 96 and the positioning member 38 are locked together about the frame 36. Furthermore, lever 96 lockingly and slidably sits on the rear rounded tip portion 90 of frame 36 and spans a length to fully seal aperture 92 as well an adjacent second aperture 100.
[0032] The positioning member 38 is forwardly biased, as shown by arrow F, via a biasing member 102 such as a spring, for example. Biasing spring 102 is mounted at one end to a support 104 protruding from a flap 106 downwardly extending from the underside 46 of the rear rounded tip portion 90. Biasing spring 102 is mounted at its opposite end to a support 108 rearwardly protruding from a front portion 110 (see Figure 1A) of positioning member 38.
[0033] For reasons which will be detailed below, the lever 96 provides the user to move the positioning member 38 against the biasing force of member 102 as shown by arrow R until a tail portion 99 thereof abuts the flap 106.
[0034] The font portion 110 of the positioning member 38 includes a pair of top and bottom frontal embossments 112 and 114 respectively separated by a groove 116 therebetween. The top embossment 112 defined a groove 118 with the underside of the frame 36 and a shoulder stopper 120 adjacent to groove 116. The bottom embossment 114 defines a shoulder stopper 122 adjacent to an inclined portion 124 of the floor 30 leading to air inlet 32.
[0035] In the illustrated example, the door member 34 can be placed at three positions namely positions I, Il and III respectively shown in Figures 2, 4 and 5, thereby moving the door between a closed position a slightly-opened position and a wider opened position so as to selectively provide for air to enter helmet 10 for ventilation thereof.
[0036] In this respect, when the door member 34 is closed (position I) as shown in Figures 1 and 5, the fin 76 is within groove 118 being

[0037] When the user needs ventilation, the door member 34 is manually pushed downwards (as shown by arrow D in Figure 5) in the cavity 24, causing the flexible fin 76 to flexibly slide along embossment 112 so as to reach and engage groove 116. The biasing springs 84 push the door member 34 upwards (as shown by arrow U) causing the fin member 76 to pushingly abut shoulder 120 thereby locking the door member 34 in position Il which provides for a slight opening allowing a small air stream into the cavity 24. The user can further manually push the door member 34 downwards (as shown by arrow D) in order to widen the opening so as to allow a greater air stream into the cavity 24 as shown in Figure 4 when the door member 34 is in position III. When moving from position Il to III, the fin member 76 flexibly slides along embossment 114 so as to reach and engage a groove 126 (see Figure 5) between the front portion 110 of the positioning member 38 and the inclined portion 124 of the cavity floor 30. The floor 30 stops the downward descent of the door member 34. The biasing springs 84 push the door member 34 upwards (as shown by arrow U) causing the fin member 76 to pushingly abut shoulder 122 thereby locking the door member 34 in position III.

Air can directly reach the user's head (not shown) via a channel 128 or through a plurality of perforations formed in the protective inner insulation 130. user, thus the user can modulate ventilation via their riding speed and the size of the opening 376.
