Abstract:
The high density foldaway shelving unit of the present invention includes at least one shelf and at least two spaced posts. The shelf is mounted between the posts. A pair of cantilevered floor mounts is mounted to the floor of a vehicle. Each of the posts is mounted to a respective one of the cantilevered floor mounts to transfer weight to the cantilevered floor mounts. A pre-assembled shelf mounting assembly is provided for mounting the shelves to the posts. The pre-assembled shelf mounting assembly has a bracket mounted to the posts, a pivot pin mounted to the shelf and a guide pin for stopping the shelf in the raised and lowered position.

Claims:
We claim;

! . A high density folda vay shelving unit for mounting within a vehicle, said high density folda ay shelving unit comprising:

at least one shelf;

at least two spaced posts, said shelf being mounted between said posts;

a pair of cantilevered floor mounts adapted to be mounted to the floor of a vehicle, each of said posts being mounted to a respective one of said canii levered floor mounts to transfer weight to said canii levered floor mounts;

a pre-assembled shelf mounting assembly for mounting said shelves to said posts, said pre-assembled shel f mounting assembly having a bracket mounted to said posts, a pivot pin mounted to said shelf and a guide pin for stopping said shelf in the raised and lowered position.

2. The high density foldaway shelving unit of claim 1 , wherein said pre- assembled shel f mounting assembly includes a gas cylinder to assist in the raising and lowering the shelf.

The high density foldaway shelving unit of claim 1 , wherein said gas cylinder inc ludes opposed ends and said brackei includes a raised portion to receive one end of said opposed ends with said other opposed end being mounted to said shelf, said raised portion maintaining said gas cylinder closely adjacent said shelf.

4. The high density foldaway shelving unit of claim 1 , further including an anti-pinch guard mounted adjacent said pivot pin and guide pin,

The high density foldaway shelving unit of claim 4, wherein said anti- pinch guard is a plate affixed to said shelf by said pivot pin and said guide pin. 6, The high density foi da way shelving unit of claim K wherein said bracket includes a lip for facilitating mounting of said bracket to said post and for distributing weight from said shelf to said post.

7. The high density foidaway shelving unit of claim 1 , wherein said shelf has side wails, said side wails including a profile with at least one raised portion, said guide pin riding along said profile and engaging said raised portion to hold said shelf in position,

8. The high density foidaway shelving unit of claim i , wherein said posts include a plurality of openings for receipt of fasteners.

9, The high density foidaway shelving unit of claim 1 , wherein said canti levered floor mount includes a base and a partial angled wall, said partial angled wal l engages and supports the lower end of said post.

1 0. A pre-assembied shel f mounting assembly for mounting a foidaway shel f, said pre-assembied shelf mounting assembly comprising:

a pair of brackets for attachment to opposed sides of a shel f, said brackets being adapted to be mounted to a post;

a pivot pin mounted to said bracket, said pivot pin being adapted to extend through a shelf;

and a guide pin adapted to stop said shelf in the raised and lowered positions.

1 1 , The pre-assembied shelf mounting assembly of claim 1 0, wherein said assembly inc ludes a gas shock mounted to said bracket and adapted to be mounted to said shel f.

2. The pre-assembled shelf mounting assembly o claim 1 0, further including a pinch guard.

TECHNICA L FIELD

[ΘΘ03] The present invention general ly relates to foldaway shelving for motor vehicles. More speci fically the present invention relates to high density foldaway shelving for motor vehicles.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

|0004] Various types of product storage, such as shelving, bin shelving, foldaway shelving and drawer systems are known for cargo vans, cube vans, transit vehicles, etc.

[0005] Foldaway shelving for vehicles is common. Foldaway vehicle shelving is provided in various sizes and for various purposes. The common benefit of foldaway shelving is that it can be folded down to support items, and folded up out of the way when not being used. However, foldaway shelving has weight limits that .sometimes limit their use for supporting heavier items,

{0006] it is desirable to provide high density foldaway shelving for cargo vans, cube vans, transit vehicles, etc, it is also desirable to provide high density foldaway shelving that is still relatively lightweight and cost effective. It is also desirable to provide shelving that is easy to assemble. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

(0007] in general terms, this invention provides a high density foida ay shelving unit for mounting within a vehicle which is relatively lightweight, cost effective and easy to assemble.

|00G8] The high density foidaway shelving unit of the present invention includes at least one shelf and at least two spaced posts. The shelf is mounted between the posts.

[0009] A pair of cantilevered floor mounts is mounted to the floor of a vehicle. Each of the posts is mounted to a respective one of the cantilevered floor mounts to transfer weight to the cantilevered floor mounts.

[OOOl Oj Λ pre-assembled shelf mounting assembly is provided for mounting the shelves to the posts. The pre-assembled shelf mounting assembly has a bracket mounted to the posts, a pivot pin mounted to the shelf and a guide pin for stopping the shelf in the raised and lowered position.

[0001 1 ] in the disclosed embodiment, a gas cylinder is provided to assist in the raising and lowering of the shel f. The gas cylinder includes opposed ends and the bracket includes a raised portion to receive one end of the opposed ends with the other opposed end being mounted to the shelf. The raised portion maintains the gas cylinder closing adjacent to the shel f.

[00012] An anti-pinch guard is mounted adjacent the pivot pin and guide pin. The anti- pinch guard is a plate affixed to the shelf by the pivot pin and the guide pin.

DETAI LED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

|00024| The present invention is generally shown at 10 in figure I . The high density foldaway shelving 10 has posts 12 for supporting the shelves 14 within a vehicle, such as vehicle i 1 shown in figure 10. [0002S With reference to figures 4 and 5, the posts 12 are mounted to the floor of the vehicle with canti ievered feet 16, In the disclosed embodiment, a separate foot 16 is provided for each post ! 2, Side mount brackets 1 8 connect the posts 1 2 io the interior walls of the vehicle. As will be appreciated, the use of cantiievered feet 16 transfers the weight on the shelves 14 from the vehicle wal ls to the vehicle floor.

[00026] In the disclosed embodiment, the cantiievered foot 1 6 has a base 1 7 and a partial angled wall 19. The partial angled wai l 19 engages and supports the lower end of the post 1 2 , Fasteners 2 1 are used to mount the cantiievered foot 1 6 to she floor of the vehicle and to mount the post 12 to the cantiievered foot 1 6. The outer edges of the base 1 7 and partial angled wal l 19 are rolled or bent to provide additional strength.

[00027] The posts 1 2. are mounted to the interior side walls of the vehicle 1 1 . Brackets 1 8 are d isclosed. The brackets 1 8 are mounted to the posts 12 through either the holes 20 or slots 22. The holes and slots allow for easy mounting in a variety of vehicles and allow for the angle of the cantiievered posts 1 2.

[00 28| The shelves 24 of the disclosed embodiment have a support surface 24, opposed sidewalls 26, a front wa ll 28 and rear wall 30. With reference to figures 6 through 9, the shelves 24 are mounted to the posts 12 by pre-assemhled shelf mounting assembl ies 32. The pre -assembled shelf mounting assemblies 32 make assembly of the foldaway shelves 10 of the present invention fast and easy. Only two connectors, pivot pin 40 and guide 42 are- needed to mount the pre-assemb!ed shelf mounting assemblies 32 to the shelf 24. in the preferred embodiment, the pre-assembled shelf mounting assembly 32 is mounted io each side wall 26 of each shelf 24. This allows the shelves 24 to be mounted between the posts 12 by the use of four bolts 35 as disclosed. It should be understood that less or more bolts 35 cou ld be used. [0 029 | The pre-assembied shelf mounting assemblies 32 of the present invention include a generally u-shaped connection mount or shelf bracket 34. The shelf bracket 34 has a rolled or bent lip 38 thai engages the post 12 to facilitate mounting and to provide strengthened support to the pre-assembied shelf mounting assemblies 32. The lip 38 transfers force to the post 12,

|0 030] A pivot pin 40 and guide 42 connect the shelf to the bracket 34, Guide pin 42 rides a long the profile 44 formed in the side wails 26. The profi le inc ludes raised surfaces 46 to stop the shelf in the fully raised position and the fully lowered position, An anti-pinch guard 48 covers the guide pin 42 to prevent pinching.

000311 in the disclosed embodiment, a gas shock 50 is provided to assist in the raising and lowering of the shelf 14, The bracket 34 includes a raised portion 52 for mounting one end of the shock 50 to the bracket 34. Fasteners 33 mount the gas shock 50 to the raised portion 52 and the shelf 14 at the sidewali 26, The raised portion 52 allows the gas shock 50 to be mounted closely to the sidewali 26 to conserve space, in the disclosed embodiment there are gas shocks 50 mounted to each sidewali 26. It will be understood that only one gas shock 50 could be used on a shel f if desired, or even no gas cylinders.
