Provided is a high-voltage discharge lamp lighting device that performs current waveform control for flicker suppression in a high-wattage lamp. A high-voltage discharge lamp lighting device provided with: a power supply circuit for supplying an AC current to a high-voltage discharge lamp having a rated power of 200-330 W; a detection circuit for detecting the lamp voltage; and a controller for controlling the output current waveform of the power supply circuit on the basis of the detection lamp voltage; wherein a configuration is present in which: 1 unit of the AC current comprises a current portion (I1) maintained for m cycles at frequency (f1) and a square-wave current portion (I2) maintained for n cycles at frequency (f2); a half cycle of the current portion (I1) comprises a high-frequency peak current portion (Ip) and a base current portion (Ib) comprising a half-cycle square wave; the peak current portion is such that the current peak value of the half-cycle on the side having the same polarity as the immediately preceding base current portion is higher than the base current portion; and the controller controls the power supply circuit so as to increase the ratio of the time (n/f2) for which the current portion (I2) is maintained relative to the increase in the detection lamp voltage.
