A high voltage power conversion device comprises a transformer (33) and a plurality of power units (A1-A5, B1-B5, C1-C5). The transformer includes at least one primary winding which is connected to a three-phase AC input power supply (30), and a plurality of secondary windings which are connected respectively to one of the power units. The output of each phase of the conversion device is so formed that outputs of the power units are connected in series, and the power units include at least one two-quadrant power unit (A2, A4, B2, B4, C2, C4) and at least one four-quadrant power unit (A1, A3, A5, B1, B3, B5, C1, C3, C5). With PWM rectifiers in the four-quadrant power units, input harmonics to the power conversion device can be compensated, the input power factor can be corrected, and energy generated from a load can also be fed back to the power supply.
