Provided is a novel hoist for an elevator device, the hoist being configured so as to reduce the size and weight of an electromagnetic brake device, thereby reducing the weight of the hoist and also reducing the size of the entire hoist. An iron core which constitutes an electromagnetic brake device is formed from: flat surface sections which comprise a pair of outer peripheral surfaces facing each other and formed in a flat surface shape; and circular arc sections which comprise a pair of outer peripheral surfaces facing each other and adjacent to the flat surface sections, the pair of outer peripheral surfaces being formed in a circular arc shape. An electromagnetic coil is housed within the iron core to constitute an electromagnet, and the pair of flat surface sections of the iron core is affixed to the hoist so as to be arranged in the radial direction of a brake disc. As a result, the weight of the iron core is reduced by forming the flat surface sections on the iron core of the electromagnetic brake device and, in addition, the size of the entire hoist is reduced by arranging the flat surface sections so that the flat surface sections are arranged in the radial direction of a disc brake.
