Abstract:

A honeycomb filter for clarifying an exhaust gas which is composed of a cylinder of a porous ceramic having numbers of through holes separated by wall portions being provided in the longitudinal direction and arranged parallel with one another, and a sealing material layer formed around the perimeter of the cylinder, wherein the wall portions separating the through holes function as a filter for capturing particles, characterized in that in the cross section perpendicular to the through holes, the proportion (S&agr ) of the area for the sealing layer relative to the total area of the cross section is 0.5 % or more, and the proportion (V&agr ) of organic components relative to the whole honeycomb filter is 0.5 wt % or less. The above honeycomb filter has a relatively large amount of a sealing material layer and, in spite of this, the amount of organic matters in a gas discharged from the honeycomb filter is little increased as compared to a gas charged to the filter.
