Abstract:
A honeycomb sintered body: which is provided with porous cell walls for dividing and forming multiple cells, exhaust gas-introducing cells the inlet-side ends of which are open and the outlet-side ends of which are sealed, exhaust gas-discharging cells the outlet-side ends of which are open and the inlet-side ends of which are sealed, and peripheral walls; and in which the shape of cross-sections perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the exhaust gas-introducing cells and exhaust gas-discharging cells is the same at all locations of the respective cells from the inlet-side ends to the outlet-side ends, exclusive of the sealed portions. The honeycomb sintered body is characterized in that: exclusive of the cells adjacent to the peripheral walls, the exhaust gas-discharging cells are entirely surrounded by exhaust gas-introducing cells; in the area adjacent to the peripheral walls, exhaust gas-introducing cells and exhaust gas-discharging cells are disposed alternately; the area of a cross-section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of each exhaust gas-discharging cell adjacent to the peripheral wall is larger than the area of a cross-section perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of each exhaust gas-introducing cell adjacent to the peripheral wall; and the cell walls connecting to the peripheral walls have a thick wall region in which the wall thickness gradually increases towards the peripheral wall. As a result, it is possible to keep initial pressure loss sufficiently low and strength sufficiently high and limit reduction of heat capacity.
