Abstract:
This honeycomb structure (1) has dividing walls (11) and a plurality of cells (12). In a cross-section perpendicular to the axial direction of said honeycomb structure (1), the honeycomb structure (1) has a plurality of cell-density regions (2), with different cell densities, in the radial direction from the center of the honeycomb structure (1) to the outside thereof. A border region (14) is provided between adjacent cell-density regions (2), separating said regions (2). Said border region (14) has the following: border dividing walls (141) that connect the dividing walls (11) of the cell-density regions (2) on either side; and a plurality of polygonal border cells (142) that are each surrounded at least in part by border dividing walls (141) and are shaped differently from the cells (12) in the cell-density regions (2) on either side. The mean hydraulic diameter (Φ1) of the border cells (142) in the border region (14) and the mean hydraulic diameter (Φ2) of the cells (12) in the cell-density region (2) immediately inwards of the border region (14) satisfy the relation Φ1/Φ2 ≥ 1.25.
