Abstract:
An apparatus and a method 10 of hot tapping a conduit 12 and inserting a sensor 22 is disclosed wherein the conduit 12 is hot tapped and the sensor 22 inserted in one step. The apparatus 10 includes a first cavity 24, a propellant 20 disposed in a first end of the first cavity 24, a plunger 18, and a second cavity 23 adapted to contain a sensor 22. The plunger 18 includes a shearing surface 46 and an aperture 48. The propellant 20 propels the plunger 18 from the first end 26 of the first cavity 24 towards the second end 31 of the first cavity 24, creating an aperture 38 in the conduit 12. When the plunger 18 is disposed at the second end 31 of the first cavity 24, the first 24 and second cavity 23 are in fluid communication with each other and the apertures 48, 38 in the plunger 18 and the conduit 12 are aligned with the second cavity 23, and the sensor 22 is then automatically propelled through into the conduit 12 by the propellant 20.
