Abstract:
The invention relates to a device (1) or method using the device (1) for the humane stun and dispatch of animals that is rapid, low-cost for both capital and running costs. The device uses an electromagnetic field generator adapted to generate a strong radio-frequency (RF) magnetic B- field that is projected into the near field to cause induction heating of the brain in the head of a target animal (40, 50, 60) without excessive heating of the surrounding skin, bone or tissues. The method/device is versatile and can be used for a wide variety of animals from lab rodents through to chickens/broilers and up to larger animals such as sheep, pigs, and cattle. Furthermore, the device is scalable from a bench-top device for use in rodent laboratories up to larger devices for use in large-scale industrial abattoirs.
