Title:
HYBRID VEHICLE TRANSFORMATION WITH ELECTROMECHANICAL ENERGY TRANSFORMED WHEELS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2010/087786
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The invention of hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanical energy transformed wheels has emerged as a result of a search for the ways of preventing the release of the kinetic energy arising from the movements and bulks of those vehicles that have already been in use today to the atmosphere through their brake linings in the form of heat when they are stopped or braked. The ways of transforming all those land vehicles with internal combustion engines and tyres into hybrid engine vehicles with the least possible cost have been investigated and it has been found that the cost of the wheels and wheel equipment is low. Therefore, it has been decided to replace those equipment with a system transforming the mechanical energy taken from the tyre during braking into electrical energy and storing this electrical energy in a battery with semi-conductor circuits. The electromechanic unit coupled with the wheel through those semi-conductor circuits adjusting the proper number of phase, voltage and frequency during the start of the vehicle will function as an engine and thereby energy stored can be used. Stops and starts of the vehicle follow each other and drivers have to stop and start the vehicles frequently, especially if they drive in the city centre. The classic hybrid vehicles are famous for saving a significant amount of energy during such stops and starts. Further, those vehicles are known to have a higher accelaration rate thanks to the aggregated power of internal combustion engine and electrical engine. Also their exhaust gas level is low as compared to other vehicles. Hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanical energy transformed wheels possess some superior aspects over those classic hybrid vehicles already in use. For explaining the most significant aspects of those superiorities in this new proposed system, we can provide the following list: a) The vehicle can be used 4x4 during its start, b) Mechanic- electric and electric-mechanic cycle efficiency is higher, because there is no mechanic transmission loss (gear systems), c) Revolution and tore adjustments can be made in wider limits through frequency and voltage adjustments in electric-mechanic cycle (it is known to be provided by the control of asynchronous engines with frequency convertors), d) With the central microprocessing unit and the enhanced electronic circuits to be used, additional features such as ABS, ASR, etc. can be provided in addition to the hybridity that will be added to the classical vehicles.

CLAIMS

1. The invention is the hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanic energy transformed wheels. It is distinctive, because it can be used in any type of already existing land vehicles with internal combustion engines and tyres such" as automobiles, minibuses, buses, trucks, transporters, heavy construction equipment and transform those vehicles into hybrid ones. Several modifications will be necessary for transforming the above-mentioned existing vehicles into hybrid ones: Changing their wheels with those wheels coupled with an electromechanic unit that can function as an engine and a generator; mounting an electric power supply unit; mounting electronic driver and control systems.

2. Protection is requested for all the devices that should be produced for the hybrid transformation between the rims, brake linings, brake disks, axle oil boxes, etc., chassis and tyres or between the suspension arms and tyres necessary for the hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanic energy transformed wheels mentioned in Request 1.

3. The systems to be produced in hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanic energy transformed wheels will also involve the vehicle's standard brake system or they will be connected to the standard brake system or designed in such a way that they will perform the same braking function with those standard brake systems in emergency situations. Protection for such designs and productions is requested.

4. Protection is requested for the use of hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanic energy transformed wheels on any type of vehicles with tyres or on those vehicles that have been produced but not offered for sale yet, or those that have been waiting at the dealers' offices to be offered for sale.

5. Protection is requested for the following innovative characteristics of the invention of the hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanic energy transformed wheels: a) In this system, no transfer loss that is seen in classic hybrid systems occurs during the transformation of the energy from mechanical into electrical and vice-versa, b) Tore and revolution can be adjusted for each wheel. Since its stator diameter is bigger, tore is higher. Also, it can be given the function of an electrical engine on each wheel and operated as 4x4. c) Thanks to the modifications to be made on the micro-processing unit software, the system can provide a shorter braking distance and more stable start without skidding by preventing dynamic frictions (with low friction coefficient) between the tyre and the road, thereby decreasing the level of friction to that of static friction limits as in ABS and ASR systems, d) The performance of the traction and handling systems on snowy and slippery roads can be improved with software power control systems.

Description:
DESCRIPTION

HYBRID VEHICLE TRANSFORMATION WITH ELECTROMECHANICAL ENERGY

TRANSFORMED WHEELS

1. As a result of acceleration thanks to the fuel used, land vehicles with internal combustion engines release kinetic energy to the atmosphere in the form of heat energy through brake linings when they were stopped (braked). In order to accumulate and reuse this energy (released during braking) while starting the automobile, hybrid vehicles have been developed. Toyota Prius can be given as an example of those hybrid vehicles. It has won a number of prizes for its merits such as saving energy and decreasing environmental pollution. In hybrid vehicles, internal combustion engine (operating with fuel or diesel), electrical engine and an electromechanical energy transformation unit that can ruction as an electric generator are coupled on the same shaft. When the vehicle is braked or slowed down on its way down a slope, the vehicle's kinetic energy resulting from its speed and bulk is transferred to the electromechanical energy transformation unit in the form of mechanical energy through transfer units involving wheels, gear, bearing and rod. Electromechanical energy transformation unit functions as a generator and the electrical energy generated is stored in lithium-ion or Ni-MH power supply battery.

2. The electromechanical energy transformation unit is used as engine when the vehicle is started, thus the vehicle is accelarated in a very short period of time thanks to the aggregated power of the two engines (internal combustion engine and electrical engine). The fact that kinetic energy is accumulated during the brakings and that the idle running of the internal combustion engine is removed bring a significant amount of saving in terms of fuel consumption. Fuel consumption for the new generation Toyota Prius is given as 4,6 litres per 100 kilometres. These hybrid vehicles are highly environmental friendly due to their diminishing fuel consumption rates.

3. The new technology proposed with the invention of hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanical energy transformed wheels shall function as a hybrid system in the way explained above for all the land vehicles including automobiles, minibuses, jeeps, trucks, vans, transporters and any type of heavy construction equipment with tyres, etc. without needing any significant changes in those vehicles' engine, gearbox, axle gear, electric and chassis electronic control, etc. systems. In order for this hybrid system to work on those vehicles, no significant change on the vehicle is required; only the size of the systems such as axle oil box, axle, brake drum to which the wheels are connected should be changed. Electromechanic energy transformed wheel unit which will be mounted together with these systems and function as both engine and generator, together with its rotating stator part, will constitute the πm of the vehicle's wheel or axle oil box on which the rim will be mounted. The electromechanic energy transformed wheel unit shall possess features provided by the state-of-the-art electrotechnic technology in terms of efficiency, cycle tuning and moment tuning. Technical features of the electromechanic energy transformation unit shall be determined and designed according to the wheel dimensions, the number of wheels and speed of the vehicle it will be mounted. This electromechanical energy transformed unit that will transform the vehicle into a hybπd one can be mounted on all the wheels or only on the back wheels or on the front wheels. The innovative aspect underlined here is that this electromechanical energy transformed unit can be mounted on any type of land vehicles (automobiles, trucks, buses, transporters, minibuses, jeeps, etc.) with internal combustion engines and tyres after they have been produced or while they have already been in use, thereby can "transform those vehicles into hybrid" ones. This system shall be composed of the following components: a) An electric power supply system involving lithium-ion or Ni-MH battery or high capacity condensers, b) An electronic power control unit for transforming the energy into the required voltage current and frequency and transforming the electrical energy (taken from the batteries during the start of the vehicle) into the electromechanic energy transformation unit which is employed as engine or for transforming the electrical energy (taken from the electromechanic energy transformation unit that is employed as the generator while the vehicle is braked or slowed down on its way down the slope) into the batteries after transforming this energy into the current and voltage required for the charging of the batteries, c) A micro-processing unit which process the data collected from all the sensors on the vehicle and perform all the processing steps that are attempted to be explained by a control software prepared.

4. The invention of hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanic energy transformed wheels explained above shall provide the vehicles with high start power and enable significant amount of savings in fuel consumption. Further, with this invention, it will be possible to increase the level of handling of those 4x4 vehicles on slippery slopes thanks to a software addition to be made on the micro-processing unit. The systems used nowadays for contributing to the balance and handling of the vehicle such as ABS, ASR, etc. can also be added with the software addition and/or amendment. For braking, energy transformation will be used primarily and no balata or disc will be used or they will be used in smaller sizes only for emergency situations. Therefore, environmental pollution and damage caused by asbestos balatas which are still used on many vehicles today will be prevented. The kinetic energy transformation efficiency of the invention of hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanic energy transformed wheels is higher than that of a classic hybrid vehicle due to the absence of gear transfer unit in this invention. Moreover, tore will be higher due to the big stator diameter of the electromechanic energy transformation unit. The possibility of controlling the revolution of each of the 4 wheels seperately with this invention will prove advantage in terms of traction and handling.

5. The most useful aspect of this invention of hybrid vehicle transformation with electromechanic energy transformed wheels is that it can be mounted on all the vehicles with internal combustion engines and tyres that have already been in use nowadays. In addition, it will enable a decrease in the energy consumption of those vehicles during their life-spans, improve their handling capacity and decrease the damage they will cause to the environment with their exhaust emissions.
