A hydraulic timer unit provided in a fuel injection pump. The hydraulic timer has a timer support base (10), a pump drive gear shaft (2), a pump drive gear (1), a camshaft coupling (3), a shuttle piston (4), and a solenoid valve (5). One side of the shuttle piston (4) is engaged with an outer periphery of the camshaft coupling through helical splines, and the other side with an inner periphery of the pump drive gear shaft through straight splines. The solenoid valve (5) is communicated with a hydraulic route. A series of oil passages is formed in the timer support base and the pump drive gear shaft (2). One side of the series of oil passages is communicated with oil chambers formed in an axially forward and backward relationship between each of both shaft end portions of the shuttle piston and the pump drive gear shaft, and the other side is communicated with the solenoid valve.
