Abstract:
A hydrophobic metal oxide powder obtained by surface-treating a powder of a metal oxide such as silica, titania or alumina simultaneously with a silicone oil having epoxy groups and a non-polymeric amine compound having primary and/or secondary amino groups in an amount not enough for reacting with all of the epoxy groups, or with a silicone oil having epoxy and amino groups which has been obtained by reacting the above-mentioned materials with each other. A straight silicone oil may be also employed in the surface treatment. It is possible thereby to impart the capability of triboelectrification regulated over a wide range from negative to positive electrostatic charges, a highly hydrophobic nature and a high fluidity to the power at a relatively small coating weight, thus giving a hydrophobic metal oxide powder useful as an additive for an electrophotographic developer.
