Abstract:
Provided is an identifying medium which can utilize a multi-tone latent image
at a low cost. An identifying medium (1) is provided with a structure wherein
a light reflecting layer (12), a transparent base material (11), an orientation
layer (21) and a nematic liquid crystal layer (31) are laminated. In the identifying
means, deviation of the thickness distribution of the nematic liquid crystal
layer (31) from the thickness that functions as a (1/4) wavelength plate is intentionally
controlled, and the thickness distribution corresponds to the contrasting
densities of the image. When the identifying medium (1) is directly viewed,
the nematic liquid crystal layer (31) cannot be seen and an image cannot be recognized.
When the identifying means is observed through a linear polarizing plate, an
image (latent image) having contrasting densities corresponding to the thickness
distribution of the nematic liquid crystal layer (31) can be recognized.
