Abstract:
The present invention provides an ignition apparatus for an internal combustion engine that performs superimposed discharging with a circuit arrangement of reduced cost and accurately detects an ion current in each cylinder. A superimposed discharging control device (2) is arranged such that a switch component (31) connected to an ignition coil unit (11), for example, to which a significant ignition signal is input is closed to apply the output voltage of a first circuit (25a) of a voltage-doubler rectifying circuit to the ignition coil unit (11). When a discharging voltage is generated across an ignition coil (51) of the ignition coil unit (11), a high voltage generated by a second circuit (25b) of the voltage-doubler rectifying circuit is superimposed on the discharging voltage, causing an ignition plug (5) to perform superimposed discharging. After the superimposed discharging has been carried out for a predetermined period, the switch component (31) is opened to break the circuit connection between the superimposed discharging control device (2) and the ignition coil unit (11), and an ion current detecting circuit (56) of the ignition coil unit (11) applies an ion current detecting voltage through the secondary winding of the ignition coil (51) to the ignition plug (5) to detect an ion current.
