The invention relates to an ignition device for an internal combustion engine, having an ignition coil (ZS) designed as a transformer, the secondary winding thereof being designed to connect to a spark plug (ZK), an actuatable switch element (IGBT) connected in series with the primary winding of the ignition coil (ZS), and a controller (SE) connected to the primary winding of the ignition coil (ZS) and the control input of the switching element (IGBT). The controller (SE) has a voltage converter (DC/DC) which provides a supply voltage (Vsupply) for the ignition coil (ZS) at the output thereof (Vout) and which can be connected to a motor vehicle electrical system voltage (V_bat), a controllable changeover switch (U) by means of which the supply voltage (Vsupply) can be applied at either positive or negative polarity to the series circuit of the primary winding of the ignition coil (ZS) and the switching element (IGBT), depending on a control signal (U_control), and a control circuit (Control) which generates the control signal as a function of the phase of the ignition process.
