Abstract:
Provided is an ignition device for an internal combustion engine with which it is possible to maintain stable combustion without increasing the time of electrical discharge of a spark plug. The turning on and off of a main IGBT 14a and a sub IGBT 14b is controlled by a main ignition signal S1 and a sub ignition signal S2 transmitted by an ignition control means 13, whereby a main primary current I1a is interrupted in accordance with the ignition timing of the combustion cycle and a main discharge voltage is generated on the secondary side of a main ignition coil 11, a sub primary current I1b is interrupted in the same time period whereby a sub discharge voltage is generated on the secondary side of a sub ignition coil 12, and the sub discharge voltage is superimposed on the main discharge voltage, whereby the dielectric breakdown voltage at the start of discharge of a spark plug 2 is increased, a high voltage is applied to the discharge gap of the spark plug 2 during the initial stage of flame kernel formation in the combustion chamber, strong flame kernels are generated, combustion speed is increased, and ignitability and combustion stability are improved.
