Abstract:
In the present invention an ignition unit (11) has an ignition coil (15), and has an overlap voltage generation circuit (17) that superimposes an overlap voltage between the electrodes of spark plugs (9), said overlap voltage being in the same direction as the discharge voltage. When the ignition period (θ) is retarded due to catalyst warmup or the like the gas flow speed in the vicinity of the electrodes decreases and the flame kernel does not grow, so the overlap voltage supply time is set longer when the set ignition period (θ) is on the retarded-angle side of a threshold value (θa) than when it is on the advanced-angle side. Thus, the discharge time can be lengthened while maintaining the same discharge current peak value in conjunction with a capacitive discharge, thereby effectively improving ignitability.
