Abstract:

An ignition system has: a partition wall (34) that separates a combustion chamber (30) of an engine (90) into a main chamber (31) and an auxiliary chamber (38), and is provided with one or a plurality of injection holes (35) communicating the main chamber to the auxiliary chamber; and a spark plug (40) that applies a voltage to a discharge gap (45) between a first electrode (44) and a second electrode (46), thereby producing a discharge spark (f) and igniting a fuel. The first electrode is provided in the auxiliary chamber, and the second electrode is provided to the partition wall or a location that is electrically conductive with the partition wall. The ignition system implements post-top dead center ignition control, in which ignition is performed after the compression top dead center (Td). During the post-top dead center control, within a 20 degree crank angle from the ignition initiation timing (Ts) at which application of the voltage to the discharge gap begins, an ignition source is positioned in the injection hole or in the main chamber, in an injection hole vicinity region (R) that is 3 mm or less from the center of the injection hole in the auxiliary chamber, said ignition source serving as a flame kernel of a size that is capable of self-propagation.
