Abstract:
The present invention improves the brightness of projected light in an illumination device using a liquid crystal element. This illumination device comprises: a light source; a condensing part that condenses light emitted from the light source so as to create a focal point at a prescribed location; a liquid crystal element disposed corresponding to the location of the focal point; a first polarizing element disposed on a light-entering surface side of the liquid crystal element; a second polarizing element disposed on a light-exiting surface side of the liquid crystal element; and a projection lens that magnifies and projects an image generated by the liquid crystal element, the first polarizing element, and the second polarizing element. The liquid crystal element is disposed at a tilt angle so that the light-entering surface and/or the light-exiting surface form a prescribed angle that is non-orthogonal and non-parallel to the optical axis of the projection lens.
