Abstract:
An illumination optical unit comprising an optical system (13−16) for applying light from a light source lamp (11) to an object (22) uniformly and&sol or focusingly, a reflector (1) for reflecting an output light from the lamp (11) to form it into a focused light, and an optical component (2) for forming the focused light into an almost parallel light flux that is then beamed to the optical system (13−16). Accordingly, a liquid crystal projector using a micro−lens−carrying transmitting liquid crystal panel can downsize an illumination optical unit while fulfilling the requirement of increasing quantity of light incident to the pixel effective area portion of the liquid crystal panel.
